First, I'd suggest going over to RimfireCentral.com and reading about the P-22 and recent problems that some have been having with certain ammos

Secondly, I'd look a the new Walther .380, as the slide and related items are made from better grade of metal and it is basically the same size with more knock down power...

I like the P22 its small lite weight and shoots well. I have seen sig mosquitos be real picky on ammo. Not so much with the P22.

I have a Walther P-22 and I love it. The first 100 rounds or so in mine took some break-in work. It wasn't shooting the bulk Federal ammo very good. I ran about 100 CCI Mini Mags thru it, and it hasn't skipped a beat since. I have the lil 3.4" version and it is surprisingly accurate. I actually spend alot more time with my P22 than my Buckmarks and Rugers. My buddy has two of them and he has had zero malfunctions of any kinds with his, and actually carries one on a daily basis just because he likes it so much.

I didnt care for either of the P22's I had. Very picky about ammo, so-so accuracy. I would go with a Ruger or Browing but they dont really fit your size criteria if you have to have something as small as the P22.

What are they going for? I remember when I picked up my 2 they were 150-200 bucks and they werent bad for the price but it seems they have gone up considerably.

I was in the gun shop last week and saw a Sig 226-22.It can be converted to 9mm,40S&W,or 357Sig.I thought the price was pretty good.I shot 200 rnds CCI thru it without a hiccup.Real accurate also.I haven't tried bulk ammo yet.I have a a Buckmark and a Ruger MkIII that took some time to break in but now they shoot the bulk stuff pretty good. Slobber the slide rails with CLC and shoot about 200 rnds of CCI.The bulk ammo is a big deal to me as my Grandson will shoot up a brick of 22's before he gets bored. That $6.00 for 50 stuff is for the birds!

I have had one for several years now, the mags on the early ones were the problem with reliabilty. I carry this pistol when small game hunting since it is so light and fun to pop squirrels with. I can repeat hits on a soda can at 25 yds.

I bought one a few years ago and it is extremely reliable as long as you shoot plated bullets in it. It is not overly accurate in comparison to other 22LR semi-autos I own, but with the short sight radius, I never expected it to be a target pistol. I like its small light weight for carrying.

I bought a Sig 229 in 22LR a few months back and it is an extremely good shooting semi-auto. The only problem is lack of a last round hold open on the magazine. However, I have found and have ordered a solution to that problem - an after market follower for the magazine that will lock the slide open just like on a regular CF Sig 229. I think I like it more than my Sig Mosquito which has never balked even once after about 2 years of shooting it.

Federal makes a 555 round pack of plated 22LR ammo that sells for @ $15 in several places near where I live. It seems to be reliable and functions well in 6 different semi-auto pistols I've tried it in without a single hitch.

The non-plated lead bullets found in the cheapy promotional ammo have a wax coating that semi-auto pistols quickly learn to not like. Stick with plated ammo and a semi-auto 22LR pistol will function reliably for a long time between cleanings.

Carried an Iver Johnson TP22 as a backup gun for a few years, swapped out for a S&W 60 w/bobbed hammer.

Lot better .22 handguns, IMHO, just not as cute as the little semi, finger burners, YMMV.

Bought a Semi for my wife. Because she wouldn't hold it with a stiff wrist, it wouldn't function properly. I am told this is common with women and children. Bought her a double action revolver. Problem solved.

OldTurtle mentioned the fairly new Walther PK-380 as a companion to the Walther P-22.

The PK-380 has no manual slide stop, so it has a relatively thin profile for CC. It does have a last shot hold open feature, but with no external manual slide stop release, the user simply pulls the slide back to release it when a new loaded magazine is inserted.

I tote a P22 and have had no issues with mine. Got it rigged on a "necklace" and ready to roll when calling in heavy cover.

For "throwing in a pack" kinda casual I would get a revolver. All hail the King of Kit Guns, the S&W M63...

LOL..!!

No arguing with your logic there, GC, but did you have to include the "King" part. Next thing you know folks will be knowingly winking at each other and and puffing their chests out if they have one.

On a more serious note, my old Model 63 is one of the last guns I would ever part with... The current model 63 can't even touch the old revolver in quality.

BCB,
I'm with ya, I have a M63 and a M34 and wouldn't part with either! The same could be said of my M18 and M17 also! Gotta love 'em. Extremely handy little handguns and the quality of those older S&W's is just superb.

I have a old 9 shot hi standard that I usually pack with me but I want a small semi to pack in with I have a bersa thunder in 380 and I like the gun but I hate the price of the 380 ammo.I would also buy one of the Walther pk if they also came in 9mm but they don't,is the P99 the same size as the P22?If it were then I would probably pick one up.
