smartwool or merino wool socks?

I've got a good base layer set of Merino wool but have never used the socks so can't comment on that. I can say this though, Merino wool is extremely nice for a base layer when hunting out West or in Alaska where it gets darn cold.

Alpaca is the only way to go! Doesn't itch, and is warmer than wool.

I was wearing wool socks around the house, feet were cold and clammy. Wife said, "here try these alpaca socks." Fifteen minutes later, my feet were toasty.

Smart Wool brand uses merino wool. I have their under garments 100% merino wool and equal silk liners. Then the merino wool socks.
Smart Wool is a good brand that stands behind the product. There are some other good brands like Woolpower, minus 33 etc. easy to find and worth it, no itch, low odor, retains some heat when wet.

All merino wool will be a good choice, but the difference between the good stuff and mediocre has to do with how soft and itch free it is. Some cheaper brands use lesser quality wool and need different liners to keep it comfortable. I have plenty of Smartwool and First Lite that are awesome.

Smartwool is nice but too expensive if you ask me. There are a lot of other choices in merino wool that do the job. I usually keep an eye out for bargains.

found a bargain today on merino wool socks by rocky $8 so i got them and give them a try.

I'm a big fan of the Smart Wool merino clothing, and socks. It is expensive, but what in this hobby is not. After spending a day walking around in damp uncomfortable socks, I'd gladly pay 20-30 bucks to not have to do it again. I have tried many other brands of merino socks, and usually find the fit terrible, they tend to sag and bunch up throughout the day, making walking in them less than groovy. Cabellas makes or made a gray and black colored pair of merino socks in the outfitter line that fit well and are incredibly comfortable, but other than those all my socks are Smart Wool. There is another benefit aside from the comfort, they don't retain odor as easily as other types of socks making it possible to wear them multiple days without washing if the need arises.

If you get the varying email discounts from Sierra Trading Post, they offer Smartwool and many other popular brands discounted on closeouts and 2nds. Read the reviews for sizing recommendations.

Mountain lodge polar hikers are GREAT!! They are merino wool and I got a few pair off of slickdeals for 3$-4$ a pair. I like them much better than my many smart wool (ski socks) and a bit better than my FL socks. I've told everyone about these new socks. They just make life better. 8^)

I have never had any problems out of merino wool sox from Tractor Supply. They are warm, stay comfortable and dry, and wear well.

well after picking up some rocky merino wool socks at walmart the other day for $8 i wore them out squirrel hunting today in 25 degrees and snow and they kept my feet nice and warm. i was a little worried about wearing them while walking alot and my feet sweating and getting cold my they seem like they breath so i dont sweat. im very happy with these socks, thanks for tha advice guys.

Wear a thin wicking sock under your merino wool outer sock and you'll be dry, warm, blister free and comfortable.

Yep...I have form fitting merino liners. They're awesome.

Another trick is spray anti-persperant. Keep the foot from sweating and warmer.

Did you know they have a lifetime warranty? Intrinsic value, if you ask me. And they seem to fit better and last. I also like Ice Breakers and/or FITS brand socks. All merino. I don't have any cotton or other material socks any longer. Merino wool for any and every situation.
