Snake boots- what brand is the best?

I wear snake boots for turkey and early season squirrel hunting, occasionally for early coyote hunts. Most often predator calling it's much cooler here and they aren't needed. Mine are Rocky's. Not sure I'd buy them again, they were something terrible to break in. When I first got them I was turkey hunting and found myself chasing an old gobbler, trying to cut him off. I knew the boots were rubbing my ankles, but my attention was focused on getting to that bird. Before I realized it, I had hiked in a couple of three miles overland in the National Forest. Long story short, I didn't get my bird, and on the hike out I became accutely aware of just how much the boots had been rubbing my ankle! I seriously considered at one point taking them off and walking out barefoot. It took a long time to finally get them broken in. Maybe the Rocky's have improved since, though I'll probably look around before buying another pair.

I won't hunt without them.Try on several different brands before you buy.But the closer they come up to your knee the better. The 17" tall are the best in my book.As soon as you get'em home put'em on an,run a tub of COLD water an ckeck that they don't leak.Cabelas also used to make a pair of pants that were snake proof,I had some chaps once, gave them to elder uncle,to heavy to wear all day.

I have a pair made by Tony Lama. I think that they were made from Anaconda. Great fitting, no break-in and look sharp with levis or slacks...

I've got the Wolf brand from Wal-Mart. 16" and waterproof. Other than getting a little hot on your feet they ain't too bad. Done a lot of walking in them. Not too expensive.

Bob,

I've been to Alabama (without a banjo on my knee!) and I wouldn't even consider walking in the backwoods without snake boots, same goes for Mississippi! There are lots of different styles. I had a pair with roll ups that worked great. I can't remember the brand but they were leather bottom and fang proof-ripstop canvas on the uppers. If you want dual use get a pair of snake "leggings" to wear with your regular boots.

I hate snakes! Especially Copperheads and Water moccasins. You usually don't see them until it's too late. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I have a pair of Rocky 17". They are fairly comfortable but a little hot dove hunting.
When I wear these out, I will probaly go with the Justin brand. I have heard good things on these from a few friends.

I got a pair of Cabela's lace up boots that were being discontinued. They were easy to break in, and happened to be goretex lined. Will never buy another pair without the goretex as it sure helps keep your feet cooler.

Regards,
hm

Funny, I have a Cabelas story on discontinued boots also, not snake boots, just regular length hunting boots w/ Gore tex, Quest is the name they were sold under from Cabelas...hands down, the best boots I ever had. When I saw Cabelas was no longer going to offer them, I sent off for an extra pair. That was three years ago and I have almost worn them out now.

I don't know what I am going to do once I retire these...Danner makes a boot that looks very similar. Maybe those will be the next ones I buy.

I may have the same discontinued boots from Cabela's. It was the first set of snake boots I have ever bought and have enjoyed them very well. I liked that mine seemed to break in fairly quick and that was one of my concerns. Luckily to this point I have not had to test their snake-proof ability.
