Is it just me....................................or is that thing pointed in the wrong direction??????????????

Been thinking of a light 38 special or 44 special with birdshot.

CCI used to sell empty shot capsules in .44 and .357. I have a couple of boxes of each left. I loaded them with #6 shot and used the Unique load data (printed on the box). They kill grouse, so they would splatter snakes at a decent range. I wasn't too impressed with the #9 shot loads they sold in the store, unless you're real close, on grouse.
They don't shrug that #6 shot off, though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Philip, he's just showing off the fine craftsmanship demonstrated in the pistol grip.

My good buddy joghotrod brings a big derringer lookin thing loaded with .410 shotgun shells. Texas Defender ?
Anything less is only marginal as far as I'm concerned.

Hey Steve,

You are right, it is a Texas Defender made by Bond Arms. Those .22 snake shot rounds that Carl had looked like they would work also.

How are things going on the farm? How did the wheat harvest go? We are in Ohio at the Father - in - Laws place and as I type this there are 2 Whistle Pigs in his back yard waiting to be shot, but I didn't bring any rifles. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I was surprised with our little pattern test out on the prairie using various shot loads. The CCI plastic cup shot loads were far less effective than the older crimped 22 rimfire shot shells. That not withstanding when it comes to prairie rattlers and me....bigger is definitely better. Give me the Defender and some shells loaded with 6 shot. In ideal rattle snake situations I have a 12 ga. and a box of pheasant loads.

They are still cutting on the farm but they called in for assistance from custom cutters last I knew. I 've been gone camping with the family so I'm not current on farm affairs though.

I think I still have some of those CCI empty shot capsules. Once upon a time I loaded them in both 38 and 44 special. I used the 44 in a Charter Arms Bulldog. While they did ok, I remember having to shoot more than one snake several times. Neither load compares to the new CCI factory loads in 45 ACP.

Keep in mind the 45 ACP loads aren't magic. They aren't meant for small game hunting, but when used within reason on snakes, they work well and allow a guy to carry a small and reasonably light weight gun.

I've carried either a S&W 317 and Kahr PM9, both with CCI shotshells. Yes the 9mm shotshells fed and were ejected from the Kahr action. When patterning both shotshells spead on the shot seem to be 1 inch per each foot from the target.

I have not tried either load on rattle snakes as the only one we killed was with a 2 ton bullet (Ford Expedition).
