Snake gun?

Some years ago I got a g20 as a trail gun. Truth is that I find it aggravates my bad back and is uncomfortable when sitting. I end up leaving it behind far too often. Furthermore, there is no snakeshot available. I have yet to run into a bear or pot farmer. What I do run into is a lot of snakes, and I looooove eating rattlesnake. The obvious choice is a .410 judge, but they are illegal in comifornia. I'm thinking of a ruger LCR in .357 or 38. I like the exposed hammer ones. Any better suggestions? I want small and light so I don't leave it in the truck.

I was pleasantly surprised that the shotshells fed reliably in a Kimber 1911. Did they do so in the Star?

100%

Like others have mentioned, the CCI 45 ACP loads in a government model is pure death on snakes. I have shot several with that combination. It patterns tight, and cycles the action on my Kimber, just like regular ammo does.

Probably asking for it here, but if the SOLE purpose of the weapon is for dispatching randomly encountered snakes, I wouldn't bother. Use a stick.

I wasn't going to say it, but I'm glad somebody did!

The last one I killed was with a broom and a dust pan. Of course it was in the middle of a Federal prison so I didn't have my snake shot on me.....

I wear a EEE boot and this track was wider than my boot. Followed it to a big brush pile where I promptly lost interest. I'd bet it was a rattler, only other snake near that size native to the area is the indigo or black snake and they are usually not very large in diameter.

At $1000+ per vial/low ball cost of anti-venon I'll shoot 'em rather than beat 'em. Average use of the drug is about 20 vials BTW.

I had two inmates bitten while I was working. $23,000 each per inmate and we got it at cost. We civilians may well pay $3,000/vial!!!

I will second the 45 auto shotshell, couldn't believe it but they cycle my Kimber also.

I actually duplicated the load using 308 brass cut down. I resized, then used a 40 s&w wesson sizer to size the step down. Made over powder wads cut out of thin cardboard and over shot wads made from plastic from the packaging that various products come in. Weigh out #9 shot cut from shotshells (didn't want to buy 25# lol), and crimp by experimenting with various 40 cal, 38 spl bullet seaters IIRC.

All in all I discovered that the CCI ones are worth what they get for them! But it was a fun project and mine work just as well.

Oh and yeah I'm not chasing any rattlers with a stick either.

No sticks for me unless that's all I have at the time, which usually isn't the case. When I'm walking about the farm, I have my 45 with snake shot, and a magazine full of 230 gr. Federal Hydra Shoks in my pocket. I can switch out magazines and cycle a round in fairly quick order should it be needed for something other than snakes.

I will leave the snake beating to others.
