Snake repellent ?

We don't have any county or town animal control.
We barely have a sheriff's department.

I'd even pay more taxes if they would hire more deputies,
pay them more and TRAIN them.

I can't complain about my property taxes at all.

But don't get me started on my federal and state income taxes or business taxes however.

I don't advocate breaking laws, but common sense must prevail here. Venomous snakes around the house have the potential to be a dangerous pest. Eliminate any reasons they would have for being there, wood piles, tall grass, scrap piles, seed feeders, ect. that might attract prey such as mice and/or provide shelter for the snakes themselves. Additionally, then eliminate the pest as the pop up until they get the message they aren't welcome near the cleared areas. I'll bet a call to the conservation agent within your county would get you the same advise. If not, the conservation agent can spend some time out there trapping the copperheads until he is satisfied. Bet that'll change his mind...

I've found the hillbilly 2-step to be quite effective on
the littler copperheads. Maybe they'll all drown in all
the rain we're getting.

Around the house we keep the grass cut short, no feeders,
etc. I think theres a nest of them under the house and
thats why there's been so many around the yard area.
Still haven't gotten to town for mothballs but maybe I can
do that tommorow if the bridges aren't under water.

If I see a snake on my property it is going to be dead if I can get to it. That is the 'law' at my house. The ONLY exception is a king snake.

ok, saw a different kind of snake in the back yard late
yesterday afternoon.
It looked a lot like this only much smaller.

I didn't have anything on or with me to kill it and I only
had my mocossins on so I couldn't even 2 step it. I think
it was a pretty young 1 as it was only about a foot long.
I was able to fling the SOB out of the yard with a stick
and it did fly nicely.

I'm hoping I'm wrong on what it was as we aren't supposed
to have any snakes like that around here. That's if it's
what I think it is. If I see 1 like it again i'll try to
catch it and get some pictures of it and get a positive ID
on what it was.

I hate snakes more and more every day.
The heavy rains and flooding have really stirred up all the
wild life includint the snakes. Got 25 inches of rain the
past 2 weeks and we're sick of it.

Randy, That really looks like a young Timber Rattler.... It's been quite awhile since I've seen one, but used to run into them when I was doing some dirt biking back in the '60s down in Greene County..

I'd bet that if there's one there's more. a shovel usually takes care of them pretty good. But the judge would be a lot more fun for sure.

Been a lot of copperheads in the same general area I found
the other snake. You notice I'm refusing to acknowledge it
as a timber ?

I did toss some moth balls under the house in the crawl
space where I saw a copperhead head in and under awhile
back. Wife bought some kind of snake-b-gone stuff today
and it just smells like crushed up mothballs.

Going to cut back some hedges along the side of the house
so they can't hide there.

I have lots of bird shot for the judge and I might even
have some .45 snake shot around this mess some place.

I haven't been around any kind of rattlers for years and
years. Not since I was around 10 and got taken on a rattle
snake round up.

If the stick was long enough and sturdy enough to sling the snake outta the yard and make it *fly nicely* to boot, said stick shoulda/woulda been plenty good for beatin the lil one foot sucker beyond recognition.

Now it's gonna come back and bite one of the pooches for revenge. Or maybe YOU out there wandering around in your moccasins.

Nah, stick was only about a foot or so long and pretty
flimsy. It was more of a quick flick with a springy
stick then a fling.

I didn't know what kind of snake it was, I only knew it
wasn't a copperhead or water moc. Didn't think about it
being a rattler of any kind as there weren't any rattles.
I had to look online for awhile before I spotted that pic
and it looked a lot like that.

I'll leave the mocs in the house for now. I had them on
when I heard 1 of the dogs snake bark so I hurried out and
still had them on. That dog is great at spotting snakes
and letting us know about it.

I warned the wife to be a little more careful while out and
about doing critter chores.

RJM,
Get you some guinea fowl... no more snakes, ticks, chiggers, and a super alarm system.

You guys have Pygmy Rattlers up there in Missouri?

They come in an assortment of colors and markings, and they grow to about a foot long. And, while they do have a rattle or two, they're so small that they are barely noticeable.

With all the rain you folks are getting up there, the snakes are holing up under the house looking for a warm dry spot RJM. Run into it all the time with the bees down here in Florida, the snakes crawl up under the pallets to get out of the weather. When it gets nasty out for a long spell, you want to be real careful when your working around a pallet of bees. Otherwise you will catch yourself leaping over pallets of bees, from a sitting or knealing position. And, snakes are not as fast as folks make them out to be... Every time I have ever had one crawl out 8 - 10 inches away from me, I was 10 ft. from that sucker before he ever thought about coiling up and striking!!

Already have a few gunieas. Think we're down to just 5 of them now.
Used to have a bunch more but they won't stay out of the woods and off
the roads.

They do a great job on the ticks, chiggers, wasps, bees, etc but I've never seen
them with a snake.

Our chickens go after small snakes and mice.

As soon as I build a new coop, we'll be getting some more gunieas and chickens.
Old coop has had 1 to many trees fall on it and is now beyond repair.
Thats coming up soon on my honey do list.

Been told we have pygmies but have never seen 1 or don't think I've seen one.

You folks down in florida have some serious snakes and problems.
We used to live there and our place was right on the St Johns river.
Had more snakes then we knew what to do with. Usually water mocs.
Neighbor was kind of a goofy sort of guy and caught venemous snakes for a living.
Then he kept them in his garage until he had enough to sell to the labs.
I hated mowing the yard by his garage.

A friend of ours has a big ranch in the northern part of the state.
They are always killing rattlers on their place. Big ones.
And their "pond" is full of gators. "pond" is 80 acres.

And fire ants everywhere in that state. I hate fire ants worse then snakes.

We were in a campground years ago by Trenton Fl and went on a guided hike.
The Swannee was flooding bad at the time and the guide took us down there.
I was crossing a downed tree and was straddling it. I glanced down and there
was a 6ft water moc stretched out on the tree. It blended in so well I didn't
see it. I slowly backed off and got out of there. Took a picture of the snake
and I'll have to see if I can find it again. Went and chewed the park peoples
butts for not warning anyone about the snakes and taking us into an area that
was swarming with them.

Nice campground but the park people were not to bright.
