Snare locks

Wileyone,

I have been using 1x19, 3/32 cable with 1/8 Thompson lock. This combo is very fast and reliable even in freezing rain.

Next year I am going to experiment with 5/64 and a 3/32 lock.

Even with the smaller cable, I don't think I will have a problem with wolves breaking out.

Wileyone,

The reason that I prefer the 1x19 is that it seems to make a better loop.

It is stiffer however and sometimes that can be a disadvantage.

I have a friend that won't use anything but the Amburg. I just have never used them.

If I remember right, they are a breaking lock right?

I have to modify my Thompson's so the cable will pull out of the lock if a moose gets caught in the snare.

My snare of choice is 7x7 3/32 cable with a 1/8 cam lock. I am still using several 3/32 cam locks that I started out with, but I have found that the larger locks function better in wet and freezing weather. Another factor is what your target animal is. I am only making land sets, targeting the canines and cats, with the occasional coon that gets caught up. If I was primarily targeting coons, I would probably try 5/64 with a 3/32 cam lock. I have never used this combo, but it is what I would use if I set any number coon snares. Also, I have never made any water sets so I don't know what would be best for say beaver or mink.

Snareman, Thanks for the info, made some snares with Grawe's Bullet Lock like the way the close but am not going to try them this year coyotes are going bad fast need some for seed next year. Have you ever used 7x7 5/64 cable? I got some and when I cut a six foot length it takes on an S shape and is hard to work with is this common? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

wileyone, No I've never seen cable forming an S like that, it might be a different grade cable than most. Then again, I've never used 5/64 cable though so I can't say for sure.

Wiley one, I had some cable go goofy when it was cut. The seller refunded my money, after she looked at it she said it definitely had a problem. She thought maybe it was loaded on the spool against the memory of the spool. My favorite used to be the 7x7 5/64 cable with a cam lock. Now I use a choke spring and a slim lock, it is faster than a cam lock, and I haven't had one freeze up like a cam lock. With a choke spring it should be ok to use the 1/19 wire.T.20
