Snipe- Season- Soon Starts!!!

Pa Teeny

New member
I can not wait for snipe season. I have all my gear, bag, light and camo. What is the official starting time? I have some new members who need pointers any information on western snipe might be helpful??

Apparently I am out of the loop. By your description I would gather "snipe" is a ficticious creature, but we actually have snipes here that I have hunted? They are small birds we walk hunt like quail in semi-flooded land.

Help me here......

Woowrow,

Yup, you are out of the loop. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

No, you are right, there is, in fact, a small bird called a snipe.

I'm guessing Pateeny is referring to the mythical creature called the snipe.

Whoa whoa whoa!!! Mythical? I think not....heck, I didn't see a muley buck for the first 4 years of hunting, but I finally got one! Pa Teeny is trying for the little furry critters with the nasty sharp teeth, I think. I like to build pit blind traps for them....but they are jumping buggers so you have to build them deep. I ususlly dig the holes about 5 1/2 ft. deep, it works pretty good for me!

Yep, we've got those critters around here too. Sort’a look like a Nauga only with more fur. Most of the time snipe will only come out on the darkest of nights, sometimes blowing a high pitched whistle will also help lure them in. The burlap bag/flashlight method is widely used in my area.

Good hunting....

I have hunted real snipe too... we have them along the seashore, here's one of them known as a Surfbird.

The have really good camo, and often don't fly 'til you practically step on them...
Here's a common snipe, which is probably what they have in Tx.

Snipe is actually the family name for many small birds including the curlew, woodcock, sandpiper, sandgrouse and turnstones... etc.

A search of junglesounds.com turned up an amazing amount of info, sound and video bytes, and some good pictures.

I would imagine that it's federally regulated everywhere, maybe I'm wrong, but here in FL, the federally set season WAS from Nov. 1st to Feb 15th. So, here, it's not coming up, it just closed. I do like hunting the little suckers. Good snap-shooting practice and you don't need a retriever. I hunt them mostly in the swamps and coastal hardwood bottoms here in central FL. You can use about any shotgun configuration but my favorite is a 20 ga with improved cylinder or cylinder bore chokes. I rarely see a shot over 20 yds so it works fine for me. I rarely get two shots so a single barrel would work just fine too.
Good luck,

Only on Predator Masters /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
And if you phone now you may be eligible for a 3 day 2 night guided hunt. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Woodcock are also known as snipe, great game birds, and quite tasty.
But that was not what I took the girls out in the woods to look for. Well maybe that is what I led them to believe.

You guys are way too serious.

I had to buy a new bag and a whistle for hunting the ""SNIPE". My 3 year old son destroyed my favorite whistle. I know I should be more careful with my hunting gear? What you going to do. Love to bag snipe!!!!

Riverrunner- What is the cost for the hunt? Do I need to bring my bag or is that supplied? I bought a new whistle-LOOOUUUD. I hear the louder the better. Do you where camo? What is there success rate? Thanks -New to Snipe Hunting! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Is it true they will freeze at the sound of a loud whistle? Heard that on a "Snipe Forumn"? Can not believe everthing you read on that site!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I prefer hunting jackalope myself. There are a lot more of them in western south dakota. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Do not know much about Jackalope. But I am thinking about starting a "Snipe Hunting video". I need to make money for this great hobbie. I will call the video "The snipe BAGGER of PA" I will tell which whistles work best and bags. What do you think?
