NoDak-No worries, I understand that everyone has an opinion on this and most are pretty strong. Coyotes arent a huge problem for our operation but are for some others that do more range calving, ours are up close to the house so the coyotes don't bother them much, just come in occasionaly and steal some afterbirth. Most of the problem for us is later in the year when the cows are out on pasture, the cows dont like the coyotes and it stirs them up and can have an effect on breed up and lost gain on calves.
I also love to hunt coyotes and do it year round. I have a few good decoy dogs and love to hunt them in the spring, again not for everyone, but legal here and effective in terms of population control. Our deer population has gone downhill the last few years, mainly due to a few hard winters, but coyotes do play a role on the weakened deer in the spring, especially with pups to feed, so any help they can get is to me a good thing. We wont killl them all, nobody has been able to for 100 years, there will always be coyotes to hunt. I have gone back to areas 2 days after it was run on sleds, walked in on snowmobile tracks, and called in and killed coyotes, so it doesn't ruin everything completely. While I do respect the coyotes intelligence and ability to survive I don't hold them on the pedestal that many people here do. They are not as smart as most people would have you believe or they would be much tougher to call. To me they are not some noble animal but a predator that needs to be kept in check, especially when they have an effect on your livelihood.
