snowshoe hare

Woodcock:

The grouse hunting is best this time of year.

"I have a thought on grouse. I think they covey in the summer and then spread out in the winter.I scared up 6 at once this summer, but in the winter I see one or two a day."

What's happening is that the brood of babies is still with mom, thus in groups of up to 10. Spruce grouse will live their entire lives in just a few acres, but in the fall will travel to gravel roads and streambanks to fill their gizzards with sand before the snowfall. This makes them easy to find. Later, in the winter, the young'uns move off to their own territory.

Cruising gravel roads and trails in October is great small game hunting in Alaska. Hares are turning white in a brown landscape, and the grouse come to the trails. And there's always the chance of spooking up a bear.

You reminded me of some good ol boys from western Mass. I was bow hunting next to a gravel road and here comes this old beat up jeep. 3 guy's sitting on top of the seats backrest. The driver stearing with his foot. They just come ideling up to me and stalled it. We got talking. They said they were grouse hunting and had 4 birds to show for it. A case of beer in the cooler and a lunch pale each. The driver said " this is how we do it around here, work like a charm."

Indeed:

" this is how we do it around here, work like a charm."

I recommend doing it without the beer, though. The beer brings a poor image, and will likely land you in jail.

Uops! I just lost my since of humor. Let me change my 30 year old recallection to reflect a more peachy-keen account. It was'nt a jeep, now I remember, It was a Dodge, Charger. The drivers name was Bow and one of the others name was luke. They were'nt really sitting on top of the seats, I just made that up. They were seat belted in. But!,Luke climbed out of his Window to offer me a lollypop out of there cooler. There Daisey bb-guns were unloaded with the action fully open. The GENTALMEN sitting in the back was very old, with a white beard, had 4 chickens, that had to be layed down. One of the chickens name was OlYella, which brought a tear to his eye.
OUGHT!, Here comes Daisy may, Wear'n cut off shorts and a tee-shirt what says "Hunters Safty Corse" I remember that very well because she was waring no brazerre..and I could see ..Well never mind.

So, you,ve got nothing to do except, your duty. Thank you, I mean that. You are law Enforcement. Am I not correct? I appreciate your concern. But just, please, lite'n up a little.

No heavy hand here, and no sworn peace officers in sight, including the mirror.

I simply enjoy cruising the back roads in my Bronco in the fall shooting hares and grouse. Sometimes I listen to rock and roll music on the stereo while doing so, but I save the beer for the campfire, and there I enjoy it in vast quantities. If the folks in western Mass like it with the beer, I suppose that's up to them. I just prefer spending the evening at the campfire with the beer instead of the Ironbar Hotel.

If I ran into Daisy-Mae, the last thing I'd be looking at would be the words on that tight tee shirt. I doubt my eyes would even get above the dangling threads of the cut-off jeans.

Huntsternorth; Sorry, I mis-read your post. I hunted all morning yesterday. In the woods by 6:30 and got back to my van at 1:00. Didnt see a thing. I'm hoping I can only have bad luck for so long and then I'll break through into a long streach of good luck.
So, good luck to ya. Again , sorry I miss-read ya.

Woodcock:

No problem at all here.

I know the situation well: "Didn't see a thing. I'm hoping I can only have bad luck for so long and then I'll break through into a long streach of good luck."

I guess that's why they call it "hunting".

I didn't get my moose this year, but I'm getting a few grouse. I wanted to get out for one last chance at a black bear, but the wife and the contractor I hired to do some work on the house had other ideas. They both put me to work. The contractor is even a harsher whipper-snapper than the wife (is that possible?)

I posted some interesting stuff happening here in Alaska on the Lions, Bears & Houndsmen forum page about the local brown bears eating people here. If you're a mind to, check it out. I quoted the local paper, and posted a link to check it out further.
