socal coyote hunting

I disagree with all your complaints about SoCal and statements that the past was so much better. They have no basis in fact. There are fewer hunters and more coyotes right now than ever?

Agreed Gary, and Coyotehunter25, if you want to get some coyotes near your place, try what has been stated. To the East in the hills has been productive for me as well. If you need more info PM me and I'll give you a couple spots.

Inoculation, I don't totally agree with Gary. There are some basis in fact.

For one thing loss of habitat and laws have changed some of the ways predator hunters play the game nowadays vs 30/40 years ago.....That's a fact.

As far as hunting predators go. The animals are still there, just not as many places to hunt them. That's also a fact.

Is it a fact that southern California has more coyotes then ever before? Who's been counting them over the years?

California has less hunters nowadays, that could be. I'd be willing to bet California has more predator hunters then ever, wanna bet? lol..............Good hunting

one fact is 30/40 yrs. ago you could hunt 20 miles from down town LA.! 50 or 60 mi. and there was allmost nothing out there except a few cities and small towns! duck clubs in seal beach and hunington beach! who remembers tin can beach?? cows and farms were just outside LA. then. can you see the riverside race way as it was 25 yrs ago?? think what it looked like 40 yrs. ago! we have lost so much hunting areas that most people even 40 yrs. old can't belive. that is what billy means by loss of habitat. the places you hunt now might be gone in a few short yrs. and you will be telling people about how great it was then! thats a fact that you will have then!!

There may be "more" hunters in terms of numbers, but the per capita numbers are way lower......guaranteed. This state sucks to be a hunter, gun enthusiast, off roader....should I continue?

The loss of habitat for the coyote is surely key to the massive numbers some of us see in our hunting grounds. And it is fact that the game is played differently now. More regulations and such.

The facts of the matter are this. California or even southern California is a huge area to cover by a single statement. In the places were I hunt, I have seen huge gains in coyote and bobcat populations. And huge gains in rabbit and squirrel populations as well. Some look at that as a negative because food is plentiful for the predator, but I think it is just natures way of doing things.

I have yet to come across another hunter while out in the field, but then again, I don't hunt like the typical "California predator hunter" that has become all to common.

Let's face it, predator hunting has taken off in the last few years. Here in California, plenty of people have jumped on the band wagon and started to hunt. I'm fine with that, hunt all you want, whenever you want to.

But just like everything else, it is a cycle. the number of callers will drop to a lower level soon enough. People will get frustrated with it, or better yet, have to sell off thier gear to pay the ridiculous mortgages they have...I have seen it happen to a few of my buddies already...

As for the more coyotes...I'm not 100% sure on that either, but I know how many I called to the gun or the camera this last season. I never had an issue finding what I was looking for.

Good hunting!

If someone was to cross from Nevada into Socal to hunt coyotes and he brought his AR with him - that would be illegal wouldnt it?

Yep pretty much, and since many of the badge carrying folks you might meet, have not read all the assault weapons laws, that are very difficult to understand, yes I'd say you might get wrapped up into something you'd regret.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

+1 for what Billy and Grandpa said..... :thumb

Still pretty good around here though considering the growth and all... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Maybe I have been gone too long (thank God) and you're right it is right by the Johnson Valley area. What I'm not is lost. Have you ever been past the dry lake bed? The road that runs through Lucerne and Landers is what I'm talking about.Bessemer mine road takes you to the offroad area. It also goes one hell of a lot farther than that. A few of you keep tallking about right smack dab...... well then you're not reading the whole post. Try 7 or 8 miles north of that. Whether it's all shotgun now I don't know. What I think is you've never been through there yourself. All I'm trying to do is help this guy out /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

I wasn't being serious with my post, sorry if it sounded that way.

The road you are talking about is hwy 247 that runs from hwy 62(29palms hwy) to hwy 18 in Lucerne. Bessimer Mine Rd runs both ways off of the 247 just after Old Woman Springs ranch. One way it stops at the MINE right on the edge of the SBNF the other way peters out shortly after Tranmission Line rd at the border of the 29 Palms Marine Base.

From the border of the base all the way to the National Forest along the 247 and from Landers dang near to Barstow is considered Johnson Valley OHV and the dry lake that you speak of is pretty much right smack dab in the middle of it all. And believe me, during the weekends, the is no such thing as getting away from the Dirt Lice now adays.

I live in hemet ca and dont have the gas to wast to drive to 29 palms unless i know fer sher where im goin if anyone could email me a map of somewere to hunt coyotes near hemet or palm springs it would be gratley appriciated. i have tryed the hills to the east of me and havnt even seen one.
my email is sk84lifekj89@yahoo.com
thanks

No problem. I'm probably more frustrated at not being able to communicate effectively. You have to go north- way, way past the dry lake bed. Maybe it's no longer officially Bessemer Mine Road that far, but a wash where I used to go. I know about the bikes. It was exact same way when I lived there. I did used to go there on the weekends. Sometimes we wouldn't call at all but just shoot. I probably shot enough there to start a lead mine. I even had a buddy that is a set builder in the movie industry that had a full size pirate ship cannon made that he used to bring out there. It shot lead the size of tennis balls. No one ever said a thing. Maybe it wasn't legal. Who knows. I have plenty of pictures. I don't have negatives though. If I can figure out how to post them, I will, and maybe you'll recognize a landmark. WE WOULD HAVE YOTES WALK THROUGH CAMP AT NIGHT WHEN WE SLEPT. Scared the crap outta my buddy's 7 year old kid once. Cracked me up. He saw the silhouette on the tent wall.
