Hope you guys can help out. i am relocating in june to ft myers area from pa, just wondering what hunting options i have in that area, deer turkey bear predators? any help would be great, also how are the gun laws down there. tahnks for the help

I live on the east coast, central, Brevard county, where the shuttle launches from. I dont think you will find many bear where you are going, some to the north. There are some in Orlando, not many and north of there.

The yotes are starting to show up on there interstate dead, so i am sure there are many more around. The ranchers and sheep people are complaining about them. There are also foxes here, you can run them with dogs but cant kill them. also lots of coons and armadillos. Duck hunting is good also

There are deer, but they dont get big. There are some decent ones in North Florida. quite a few turkey and hogs, hogs, hogs. They are a big problem here and lots of trappers in the area that try and keep up with the demands of the non hunters who are tied of their yard being rooted up. I hope you like pork.

Also we have the larget predators in the county here. Aligators, i dont know about the place you are going but in my county they issue permits to harvest them. Any custom call makers here make a gator call? any other question give me a yell.

Fortunately, our gunlaws are not very restrictive, I know them all, be more specific and we'll get your question answered. Coyote hunting is improving as they spread south. But I don't think they've made it to Ft Myers yet, could be wrong on that. No real varmint hunting like prarie dogs or groundhogs, plenty of feral hogs though! Problem is access, no-one wants to give it. Laws on WMA's are pretty restrictive and almost all other private hunting land is leased to hunt clubs. So you either pay out the nose to hunt on prvt land or you hunt where and how and when the state says you can. Unless of course you can find a privaste landowner to give permission...good luck. The public land has gotten so crowded now that to get into the really good areas, you have to apply for a "quota permit" Or pay like $200 to hunt an area for the weekend. They call those "special opportunity hunts" Here's a link to the FWC site.

hey thanks for all the help, i think it is a carry state, conceled weapons is what i mean. Yes i will miss pa for hunting, i am going out one last time to try for coyote before i leave. thanks

Yes, FL is a right to carry state. You must of course apply for and recieve a CWP. As far as guns and vehicle go, the law states that one can have (with or without a CWP) a loaded firearm in their vehicle provided it is "securely encased", glove box, trunk, even a holster w/ a snap under/on the seat is fine

foxking,

Yes... Ft Myers is loaded with 'yotes. I've killed several down there. Get your residency established as quickly as possible so you don't have to pay non-resident license fees.

Babcock Webb Wildlife Management Area and the Yucca Pens Unit are loaded with 'yotes but seasons are very limited.

Yucca Pens

For longer seasons check out Green Swamp and Ocala in central Florida. They're on the www.myfwc.com website.

Babcock Webb has an excellent public range also.

thanks again i thought i was going to have to give up hunting, do you know if you can hunt with a crossbow with disabled permit? how is the deer hunting im coming from PA so im spoiled , i cant wait for the fishing i love those big silver kings.

Arborman is 100% correct about getting permission to hunt on private land. The FWC is 50 years behind times in this respect with many senseless rules. Yotes are problems in many areas, even in very populated areas such St. Petersburg, Tampa airport and Clearwater just for starts.
They love cats, dogs and your kids. Florida has some excellent progun laws and they're getting better. Good luck on your move, you will love it here. (After you get used to the heat)Careful you don't hurt your back shoveling sunshine. Summer time thunderstorms are real beauties.
