Spearfishing- fresh water?

As I said will be hunting both waters fresh and deep blue where we could see 30-40 feet off of nags head. My buddie is a capt. We went fishing and could see tons of line shy fish and they would come up too boat and see wahts going on.

can you shoot less bands??

All I've done lately is by snorkeling in bays down in FL. Even in deep water, spearfishing is a fairly close range prospect. With big fish, power matters, so it depends on how big fish you think you'll go after.

That is my delemma. In PA the fish are small, But in Nags Head we saw some pretty nice barracida and cobia. The cuda were big?

I am new as I said?

Get something with enough power, then. Cuda can get bigger than most people think. I went on a dive once out in the Gulf Stream, about 25 miles off the NC shore. When I dropped off the boat there were several cuda and sharks under me, just cruising along.

Those cuda were every bit as long as I was, including fins -and I'm 6 ft tall to start with- and about as thick as telephone poles. I had a decent sized speargun, but decided not to shoot one of those

I think most people see cuda in the 4 to 5 ft size, one of those I would've shot.

You might want to buy 2 guns. Get a mini-carbine or maybe the next size up for use in PA, and a more serious gun for the saltwater critters.

Pateeny, You otta think about a wetsuit. you wont last to long without one. Once you get below the thermocline there will be a 10 - 20 degree differance. cold takes all the fun out of it. A used 5mm wetsuit and a 10 lb (2- 5 lb) weight belt $100. will make all the differance in the world. The only think is once your waring a "closed cell neoprene " wetsuit some laws of boyance will apply and you might need a litte in-water training.
Theres not much sientry to breathhold diving but there are some tricks to extending your time underwater and with that, increases the chance of passing out. Never dive alone.
I've spent 10's of 1000's of hours underwater, working and the novilty findly wore off. my wetsuit has costom pluming for hot water. 4 gallons a minute. I plug in at my chest. 5 small hoses run to my toes and hands. 100 degree water. You should feel what thats like in january. Ha!
You will have much fun for many years and eventually get certified in scuba. Practice good watermanship and be safe!
