i bought my first box of speer bullet a couple of days ago. im not impressed. the first thing that happened is after cutting the tape that holds the lid closed on the box, the lid wont stay latched. picked up the box, lid opens and 100 bullets all over the floor.

i had a chance to load up 40 rounds yesterday, .243, 85 grain spbt. weights varied from 84.7 up to 85.5

coal was just as bad. i know the dies dont seat the tip, but on the ogive, but oal was all over the place.
i think this is my last box of speer bullets.

I have never got that particular bullet to shoot as good as I wanted it too. The posted BC for it makes it attractive as a long range yote bullet.

I have found that other Speer bullets can be quite accurate. Their TNT vermin bullets have proven to be quite good in many different rifles.

I haven't used a lot of Speer bullets over the years but as it turns out I am using two Speer bullets this deer season in loads for family members. I have a couple of boxes of .243 Speer 105 gr. Hot Cores that shoot really well under a dose of IMR-4350 for one .243 Winchester rifle. I killed a couple deer years ago with this bullet and it performed just as well as the Hornady Interlock or Remington Core-Lokt bullets. It is out of production now but I wanted to shoot up the last of them and this kid's rifle just loves them. And one Marlin .30-30 just absolutely loves the Speer 170 gr. flat point to the tune of shooting 1 1/16" five shot groups at 100 yards. Not shabby for an old lever gun with a 1.5-4.5X scope. Sometimes the yellow box bullets can do alright.

I have never been a big Speer bullet fan either. I do however like the 50g TNT bullets for coyotes as they work well and are accurate. I want to try some of the 55g version.

I agree about the box design as it won't stay latched properly after opening and it is a pia. TTT

The 85g Speer BTSP is a big game bullet, not a varmint bullet. If you are wanting a bullet in that weight, then the Sierra 85g BTHP is a shore NUff winner.

The Speer 70g TNT is a darn accurate bullet, along with the 50g TNT, you don't see the ogive on those bullets with much variance at all!

I don't care about the box design, I care about how they kill and how they shoot. Just put a piece of masking tape over the lip of the box. Now that you know it is a mouse trap, I doubt if you will have much of a problem.

When I made benchrest bullets for competition, I found that a bullet could weigh as much as 2.0g lighter and still cut the same hole in the target using a 6 PPC at 100yds, as the distance increases so does the effect on weight variation.

Some people think that speer bullets are crap, it is not true, rifles have their preferences. My Rem 700 in 25/06 shoots tiny groups with the Speer 100g Spt BT, and the 30/06 loves both the 165g flat base and BT.

good luck

One thing I don't like about Speer is when are they gonna come out with some new bullets?? Same thing year after year and did you like their nice price increase this year? By the time they come out with a .20 cal bullet(or a .17 cal) these two will probably be history!

Ole

Ole I think that speer came out with some new ones for this year , don't quote me but check their web site. That said the TNT 70 GR out of the 243 over IMR 4350 makes nice little holes out of my savage , I just couldn't find any last time so I have gone to the 75 GR HP from sierra and Ramshot Hunter powder it is nice also. Check out the 87
GR from Hornady

Have you not heard? They have come out with "new" bullets,
replacing "Hot Core" with "DeepCurl". I hear they're about
the same design, but the DeepCurls are bonded bullets.

good feedback on the Speer 85gr 243 bullets - I was just looking at those on-line last night and correct, the stats on this thing do make it sound amazing!

I've used Speer 50 TNT's in my 222 and they are fantastic. So I wouldn't be opposed to trying them now in 70gr weight for my 243, but does anyone think these are going to really buy me anything over 70gr Sierra BK's or Nosler 70gr BT's ?? (I somehow doubt it).

More and more I tend to just migrate to Sierra where I have yet to find one of their bullets that isn't accurate and exceptionally well made, and in one case where I did get a box of 39BK's for a 204 that had some product quality issues - well, they stepped right up and replaced them promptly.

sometimes it the little crap that counts. first impression type of thing.
if they dont care about the little things like the box, maybe they dont care about the bigger things, like the bullets.
my 2 cents

Hey 5SPD, me too!

Back a few years ago, there was a guy in AZ that had a deal that if you bought 5000 50gr. TNT's he would throw in another 5000 free.

Well OK, it wasn't quite that bad, but I sure have a lot of them still on the shelf.

My 25-06 AI loves the 87 grain Speer TNT's.

I've also had good luck with the 22 caliber 50 Grain TNT's in a coupla guns.

Yeah, you guys nailed it...the box musta been designed by committee. The Democratic Committee!!

LOL.

Been using Speer 165 gr. BT's in our 30-06's with slightly better accuracy results than the Sierra rendition on those guns, and they like the 125/130 gr. varmint bullet too. Those varmint weights sure make a mess of groundhogs at 06 velocities, and the 165's can do the same thing at short range if you hit bone. I like 'em [beeep] - never weighed and measured [beeep].

I like the Speer 180 grain flat nose for my 35 Remington. It is far better than any or the other Hornady rubber tipped or 200 grain round nose bullets. Had good success deer hunting one shot one kill type.

I like this bullet. It is excellent in the .35 Rem.

I've used Hot Cors in the 35 Whelen(250gr), 30-06(165gr.) and 7-08(145gr.). The Whelen shoots them exceptionally accurate and the other 2 shoot mediocre. They kill mediocre too.

My favorite Speer bullets are their Gold-Dot and Uni-Cor offerings. The bonded ones. The 270gr GD in the 444 Marlin is wicked deer and black bear medicine, and the 300gr UC penetrates even deeper, but not needed unless bigger game is on the dockett. The UC made for the 45-70 are also excellent bullets at a great price....

I shoot Speer 100 gr. Spitzer Boat Tails in my 25-06. Very accurate and a real winner. I've taken five antelope, a mule deer, crows and groundhogs with that load.
