My coyote season has been dismal at best and Sat night stayed on par.
Friday we had two dogs yapping at us from behind a house on a ridge and they toyed with us for over an hour before they laid down and went to bed.
Normally I'd try to sneak up on them, but that wasn't happening with 18 inches of crusty snow on the ground and 500+ yards between us.
We decided to hunt the backside of that ridge Sat evening when sane people are inside staying warm.
We snuck in from a neighboring farm and heard them yapping from the other side of the ridge we saw them the night before.
After a couple of male and female howls we spotted them coming over the ridge, but of course in the only direction we can't shoot.
A slight breeze was in our faces, so I wasn't worried about them catching our scent, but they ended up taking the path of least resistance and followed the fence line of the neighboring horse farm down the hill into the woods, yapping the whole way.
I thought they eluded us again, but I didn't give up and got them riled and moving in our direction through the woods with some territorial calls.
Still upwind, I got them to commit with some barks and whines, then I let silence do its thing.
I don't know how I missed a 160+ yard not rushed shot at two dogs sitting right next to each other with my 20 cal death machine, but it happened.
Maybe I shot in between them ?
It was good to converse with coyote again and next time I hope I'll be able to finish the job.
The shot happens around the 2:56 minute mark if you don't want to watch coyote being coyote.
