Split toenail?

Caught my dog lickin his foot today and noticed it was bleeding. After further inspection I found his toenail was split pretty good. Should I jUst let it heal and fall off or get it removed and treated? I don't want an infection right before season. Thanks!

The problem is he might lick it until the surrounding area of his toe is raw. I would wrap it with vet wrap for a few days and keep him from chewing the wrap off. Neosporin would work to lower the chance of infection.

Do what a woman would do and super glue it or use nail glue.
My terriers get their feet trashed and their nails pulled off often from coon. It will be fine if you do nothing too but the glue would be helpful

Yep, super glue will fix it right up. If it looks infected you will want to treat that aswell, but for the split, all you need to do is put it back together and time will do the rest.

well now it looks as though its gonna fall off. it has split in half not down the center and i just keep giving him a pain med 50mg of novox and neosporin? should i wrap it up or just let it heal unless it gets infected?

If it's gonna fall off I think I'd leave it open to let the air get at it and clean it with a little peroxide now and then. JMO

First choice, I would glue it, if it looks like its gonna fall off any how, I would "clip it" back to solid nail.
Vet wrap or any other bandage on most dogs feet is a waste of time. For one, they most times chew it off, if they leave a bandage on, it gets wet and nasty, and makes things worse than leaving it open.
There are a number of good fixes, but hard to suggest anything more without looking at the foot.
Most times,I cut off the split nail, give the dog a shot of "Penn", and keep on going.

If the nail is split but is still rooted firmly, you can cut the nail back to just behind where it is broken. Have some clotting/styptic powder (even silver nitrate if you have it) on hand and apply light pressure if you can for about 30 seconds because it will bleed (the "quick" is in the toenail itself). If it is split down to the base and the entire toenail is loose, you can sometimes pull the toenail off. Either way, I have never wrapped a broken or split toenail. Your best bet would be to have it checked and obtain a short course of antibiotics. Short of that, Neosporin and KEEPING THE AREA CLEAN and soaking in a very light iodine or chlorhexidine solution once to twice daily will be your best bet, but no guarantees.

This pic was the first I saw of it (he kept it hidden). I cut off the leading dry edge of the lower part (carefully) every couple of days. He kept it clean after I started clipping it back.

The upper part just pulled out / fell off right after the photo was taken. I couldn't run him for a while, but eventually booted him and he was gtg.

My fault for letting the nails get too long (as you can see on the next nail over) and then running him on rock.

Dude,
that is nothing. Take some toe nail clippers or sharp dikes and cut it off. Spray some wound coat on it and call it macaroni.
As I said before I have working terriers and often coon rip their pads and toenails off. You don't need pain meds, wrap and all that other stuff. It will be groovy soon all by itself even if you only clipped the dead toe nail thingy off.
Your dog is probably ready to roll as I type this.
Good luck,
and as I said before I want to live at your house! lol
Good job of taking prestine care of your animals.

Yeah he's fine I only gave the med to him once and I only had it because a few months back he got hit by a truck. Figured what the [beeep]. But he's good, nail fell off and doesn't seem to bother him
