Sponge "only" camo painting?

I painted a couple of my guns already using Krylon paint and sea sponges. They have turned out pretty good because I followed the instructions posted by a lot of you on this forum.
A couple weeks ago I stripped all the camo paint off of my 870 in preparation to camo it again. ( Paint was starting to get tacky in places)
My 870 is all black with synthetic stocks and I thought it might look pretty good using several colors and just sponge them directly onto the black gun.

My question is... has anyone not sprayed a base coat on the gun first before sponging on the pattern? How did it turn out?
Please post pics if you have them.

Thanks

Thanks guys.
I found this image on here. Take a look at the upper receiver and the tube. Looks like it's sponged directly to the gun's finish.

you are right...the upper and float tube I just left the factory finish, just prepped with laquer thinner and blew it off with the air compressor, applied the color and then clear coated. It has held up really well.

Thanks bushy, that answered my question. It looks great. My 870 is going to get a new camo job.

hey guys that one is done with rustoleum and "model" enamel alot like testers...the black is made with a paint marker, I go in and draw in the shadow on one color and that causes the 3d effect.
