Spotting scope choice.

Never used the Nikon so I could not say.

I have always been happy with all my Leupold optics.

The only advice I can give from my use is find one that the eyepiece is straight out the back and not on an angle if you are shooting off a bench.

That makes a lot of sense. I believe it will be a Leupold then , my rifles are all scoped with Leupold so I guess there spotting scopes should be good as well.

Thanks a lot for your recomendations.

The Leupold Wind River spotters are a poor choice, IMO. The view is nothing like their riflescopes and nothing like their 12-40x60mm Gold Ring spotter.

Roy - I am with Buster on the Wind River spotter. I have one and it is not much.
Spend more and get the gold ring spotter.

Like you I thought the windriver would be close to the Leupold scopes I use. It is not. Been going to call Leupold and let them know as well.

Regards
Kelly

i've used both, both are great spotters, the goldring is a higher quality leupold glass, but so is the price tag.
the nikon is good 16-47X60 and for a 400.00 price tag the glass is great.

Roy,
I can't really comment on the L., but for less $ and still great quality check out Nikon's Spotter XL II Zoom. Comes with everything you need including a tri-pod.

another solid choice and step up in $ would be Fieldscope 50 ED which I use all the time. It's small enough to take on vacation as well. Here's a pic from my last vacation watching boats and checking out top water activity.

Roy,

After doing a little looking about, the Leupold Gold Ring 15x30x50 Compact you mention is at least 3X USD more expensive than we are able to buy it here! For the kind of money ($1300 USD) you should be getting a premium scope with ED glass.

One of the ways that I have found to get great reviews of optics is by going to bird watching sites. Birders are very particular about their optics, to the point of being a little creepy sometimes. Often times, they are notably frugal and give reviews of all price ranges of binos and spotters.

I myself chose a Brunton compact spotting scope that has given me great service. I have used Nikon products also with good to excellent results. If you are willing and able to buy a spotter for $1000 you should expect nothing less than an excellent product. In my opinion ED glass (Extra low Dispersion) is worth the money.

Having said all that, I have no notion of what tariff you are subjected to when ordering on-line from the states. I hope you can find a good bargain.

Thanks you guys , just [beeep] tough here when it comes to import duties. You get nailed heavily and you can see our retailers take serious advantage of us often still making over 100% profit after duties.

This hunt is upon me now and I dont see anyway around but to buy one locally.

Wish me luck !!

Best of luck Roy!

There is no doubt we have things pretty darn easy here. Compared to much of the world price and availability in the States is ridiculously easy.
