Spotting scope for both bench and hunting?

Yes.
I bought it with the 20-60 variable eyepiece and got the best resolution at about 25X. I bought a fixed 25X eyepiece and it was even better than the variable set on 25X.

Sam, so if I were to step up to the Celestron Ultima 100 I should really have no problem at all seeing .223 or .270 holes at 200 and maybe even out to 300?

Also, any recommendations for tripods?

I read somewhere that a Celestron tech advised using the 100 mm model to see 30 caliber holes at 600 yds. You will easily see 22 caliber holes at 200 with the Ultima 80.

Good table top tripod are hard to find other than the Freeland that is pricy. Bushnell and Tasco made the ones pictured on mine and the Kowa pictured above. I think you can still buy the Bushnell from some of the optic suppliers for about $40. I got two off ebay for a lot less. If you don't have a sturdy bench you can use a heavy duty camera tripod.
