Is there such a thing as a budget spotting scope that will allow me to see 223 holes in paper targets at 200 and 300 yds ?

My shooting partner and I have been using a Leupold® SX-1 Ventana™ Spotting Scope 15X45. We easily see .223 holes at 300 yards. Here is a link.

You'd have to define "budget."

While about $30 over your spec,,,The Redfield 20-60x lets me see .204 holes at 300 yards
unless they are in a solid black background...I generally use a 3" red target dot on a white background...

It has a great padded carry case and a pretty decent tripod...Since Redfield is produced by Leupold,
it's one of the better optics on the market,
for the money...

Unfortunately this is a problem best solved with money, lots of money.Shots in the black are hard to see.Shoot white targets with small dark dots and start saving.

I agree with the Redfield that was posted above. If you want to absolutly keep it under $200 take a look at the BURRIS High Country 20-60x60 Spotting Scope KIT. $170.

I checked out the redfield at Gander Mountain. I wear glasses and found the redfield had a very limited eye relief. I will keep looking and take a look at the others mentioned. Right now I tried using a Simmons, now there is a cheap one ( 60.00 at wally world) but its not doing the job for me so it went back. I am going to try a white back ground with an orange dot and see how that goes. A couple guys are going to meet me at the range today and let me try their spotting scopes and see if there is one I like.

rebs,

Spotters are tough as they are one of those things that can't be made well for cheap. 2-300yd .224 holes ain't the easiest unless things are ideal and you have a decent target, (white) no mirage, and the sun to your back. You will see some, but it's not going to be horribly consistent.

Best advice I can give you is to find one of these discontinued Leupolds. They come up used fairly often:

They were made in 20X and 25X. This is the 20X. Glass is [beeep] good for the coin, and it will double as a fine hunting scope if you ever choose to use it that way. They are compact, lightweight, and you can usually find them for $200.00 ish.

The 20X with this quality glass will enable you to see what you're trying to see in ideal conditions, as well as be a GREAT all around spotter for you.

I've used the cheapest spotters to the absolute best spotters, and this scope will serve you well. Save your coin, be patient, and find one.

One other thing...

If eye relief is a concern (it should be because it sucks on low budget spotters) the old Leopold spotters are fantastic in that regard.
