Squirrel call for yotes?

I'm wondering if a squirrel call would be useful for calling coyotes in timbered areas. I'm trying to add any advantage I can to improve my calling success. Thanks.

The second coyote I ever called. Had a squirrel treed over in the next timbered draw. I heard the angry chatter of a treed squirrel. Around a minute after I sat down & started callin over the next large rise. Here came this large dusky black coyote pronking up over the CRP hillside panning 180, where I was planted.

He seen me the same time I seen him. Coyote, instantly went flat out with the burners on, going down hill. I commenced to unload my mag. Rolled him running on the far valley.

I have one and have only used it twice. Nothing on the first try, but had a badger come in on the next time I used it.

No luck for me yet as I only use it when I have burnt out my favorites calls that produce on my prime stands. By the time I get around to using it the areas are likely burnt out so I am not giving the call a fair chance, maybee this year I should start out with it but then again if others are using the more tradtional calls I would rather wait till the coyotes have heard it all but the squirrel.

I recommend the Hunter Specialties squirrel call to anyone who is looking for a good hand-held call. It's extremely easy to use. It can produce barks, chatters, and, more importantly, high-pitched distress squeals. Mixing in some barks with the squeals adds a special realism, too. The price is only $10 at my local Bass Pro Shop. It would work as dandy coaxing squeaker, but it should excell in the timber as a primary close to medium range call. I haven't had success with it yet, but I feel my time is coming soon.

YEP!!! One of the "secret weapons" of some hunters! I use the Haydel's "Mr. Squirrel Whistle"... it's hands free and works like a charm! Check it out... you can hear the sound!

Mr. Squirrel

I got a little custom made squirrel call from MattS. It sounds and looks good. It's made from Elk Antler if my memory serves me.

I use a squirrel distress often. I use a Faulk's handcall, and, have squirrel distress on my FX3. Both have been very effective for me here in the Ozark timber. I have actually watched coyotes chase squirrels in the timber. I've found squirrel claws and bones filling coyote, bobcat, and grey fox scat. In the areas I hunt squirrels probably out number rabbits 5-1. I know redtail hawks and owls both catch squirrels as I've seen that happen. Squirrel distress calls have been discussed before. With that said, I ran a search of "squirrel distress" and "squirrel" and couldn't find some of the prior discussion. I can remember some good talk about using a squirrel call from past threads. Anyway, they work and quite well... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
