Squirrel Distress Whistle Call

sweaty mac,

The second coyote, I called in. Had a squirrel treed[squirrel was giving it's warning call]. as I walked back into the outer edge of a CPR plot with timbered sloughs.

I set-up around a 150yrds West of [that] timbered draw. Over on the opposite side of a very large hill. Wind was out of the North, draw was straight East of me over the same large hill.

I commenced to squall on my call slowly panning left-right. Around 5-minutes later. This large blackish coyote, came over the ridgeline, pronking in the grass. Trying to locate my sound. We seen each other the same time, he went flat-out, down the hillside. I went to spray mode, to help him along /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif.

When I walked into that section. I walk slow, often stopping around every 50'. To look around & listen. When I came to where I was going to drop down the side of that large hill.

Something had that squirrel treed. I stood there trying to see through the trees, as to what it was. I figured, either a feral cat or a coyote.

Turned out to be a coyote.

I've never used the call for coyote hunting, but have used it squirrel hunting and my results were mixed, I do know that it won't scare them off, but sometimes they seem to just ignore the whistle.

I have never had any luck with it. All I can seam to do with it is make the squirrels stop and look at me (maybe that is what is used for?). I would like to use it for coyote hunting because it has dull purpose. I will try it though and keep you all updated, but season doesn't start until september 7.

Did you run a search for "squirrel distress" on the forums here? If you do you'll get some information about it. Yes, it does work.

Sorry about that, you're right, that's a tough search. It has been discussed several times on the forums, I don't know why more doesn't reveal itself when searching unless some archives were lost when the new board was organized. I do use the squirrel distress whistle (Faulk's wooden model) occasionally with good results. I've found coyote scat here literally loaded with squirrel claws and know that Missouri predators make full use of our plentiful squirrel population. I've seen hawks and owls catch squirrels while I was in the woods. In fact, a month or so ago I heard a murder of crows attacking something and got curious enough to take a look. A redtail hawk had a fox squirrel down in the field across from my house and was engaged in a wrestling match while the crows performed as a wild audience. The squirrel was screaming off and on just as the little Faulk's distress call does. I've also made a scratch shot on occasion while squirrel hunting and had squirrels squeal, the call sounds authentic. While sitting in a tree stand deer hunting twice I've seen raptors grab squirrels, another redtail hawk, and a great horned owl. Each time the squirrels made the same whistling screams. Here's a story for ya...

Thanks for the story and the link GC. I have seen squirrels taken by a hawk before while hunting, but was too far a way to hear it sound that it makes. I saw that you are from the ozarks. I am from the moutain home area of the ozarks.

Mountain Home and Bull Shoals Lake, man that's pretty country! I just got back from a mini vacation at Branson. The Ozark's are tough calling country, but it's worth the effort! It doesn't get a whole lot prettier anywhere IMHO. Thanks for the compliment Joe.

I hate to sound biased since I make some but I have had luck with the whistles in the past but I was always squirrel hunting first and just happened to call in coyotes. It has happened often enough for it not to just be a coencidence. In fact alot of these different type sounds can often make the difference.
The very first coyote I ever called in was with a woodduck call I was blowing on the edge of a swamp while duck hunting. I heard something behind me and turned to see this coyote 3 feet from me running full out. I swear he switched gears in mid air. He caught a load of # 5's in his rear. This area was heavily hunted by the owner of the property.
I also was once rabbit hunting with a buddy running his beagles in a small Thickett surronded by pasture. Well the beagles must have run out a pair of coyotes when we saw them my buddy and I squatted down and he whistled for his dogs to come. Those coyotes came as well. We got one.
I know these sound like wild stories but 100% true!
