How many here save their squirrel tails and sell them ? What kind of prices do you get ? I have been looking for some grey and black but didnt want to hit ebay.

When I was a kid my favorite outdoor magazine was Fur-Fish-Game Magazine (still enjoy that magazine) and they always had an advertisement from Mepp's Lures about buying squirrel tails. My Grandpa, dad and I killed a lot of squirrels, both grey and fox squirrels, and I started saving the tails. For several years I saved squirrel tails and processed them according to Mepp’s directions and shipped them to Mepp’s for equal trades in fishing lures. It was fun and a good experience. That has been a very long time ago…

I don't remember, that has been about forty years ago. I swapped mine for fishing lures and I do remember those Mepp's lures worked pretty well in our farm pond and in the creek that ran through our farm. Odd now that I think of it, I haven't used a Mepp's lure in a very long time. I may have to revisit some Mepp's spinners this spring.

GC,
I will guarantee those Mepps will get fish for you. I still use mine. They aren't quite 40 years old but a solid 35 years old. I have added some squirrel and buck tail hair occasionally, but they still have the wiggle to get strikes.

My old Mepp's lures are long gone, but I may save some more squirrel tails and get some new lures...

I get about 40 cents in credit on average. They'll bring 3 to 5 bucks in a fly shop.

I've got a bunch of grays I'm getting ready to ship out. How many do you need and what's your bid.

I salt and semi-dry them (couple days) then put them in paper sacks in the freezer. Works great. Lose very little hair.

ultramag.. just saw your post. Virtually nonexistent here. A few show up in cities. I have seen exactly one in Iowa - outside city limits.

junglecat.. nope. in fact Mepps specifies bone left in.

We still send ours to Mepps every couple of years.
We just cut them off with a pair of sidecutters, dip the fleshy end in a strong saltwater brine and dry them out for a week or so and send them in a box.
