they can write a trillion dollar check and fix this anytime they want. they proved it during covid.

if you didnt pay into it, you shouldnt collect.

my brothers wife is a stay at home mom and never paid into it, yet she can collect based on his soc sec and it wont affect the amount he collects......good for her, but....NO

The mom of a buddy of mine did the same, I doubt that SS was originally set up to pay people who never, or barely, paid anything into it, and they seemingly keep adding more and more things to it to make it insolvent faster!

That seems to be the mindset, cities, states, SS, Medicaid, etc., run them into the red and then rely on the Fed. Govt to bail them out, this is all going to come to a head one day and it ain't going to be pretty!

The basics of the article is that SS $ were in a fund and congress sells bonds to cover the funds, then (per Johnson) SS $ are covered by an IOU from Congress. Gov CAN'T cover the cost (buy back) of the bonds!! Doubt that 80T$ is in 'national debt' numbers.

Very good question! Here's AI's reply.

Is the $80T Social Security Owing Included in the National Debt?

The $80 trillion figure you mentioned is not the current Social Security trust fund balance — that’s far too high. As of late 2025, the federal government owes Social Security about $2.54 trillion in special‑issue Treasury securities held in its two trust funds (OASI and DI) legalclarity.org. This is the amount still owed to the program from past payroll tax surpluses, not a $80 trillion liability.

However, this Social Security debt is included in the official “national debt” numbers. The U.S. national debt is defined as debt held by the public plus intragovernmental holdings, and intragovernmental holdings include IOUs owed to federal trust funds like Social Security and Medicare Truth in Accounting+1. In other words, the $2.54 trillion Social Security trust fund balance is part of the $36–39 trillion “public plus intragovernmental” debt reported by the Treasury.

yeah keep pressing it and you will find out that yep the amount due to SS is right at 80T ( why because of the notes have not reached maturity yet and some that had had not been asked for so was reinvested into the general fund with the accrued interest to be rolled over again.)

The other reason 2.5 kids per couple (or woman as the AI likes to use, and honestly seeing how generally the human population has a tendency for more females than males yeah each female would be better metric) for each Generation...... more and more abortions .... the desire to not have kids.. Gen X and beyond has pretty much doomed themselves. Although Gen X is doing a ton better than the Generations that follow.
Yes this is harsh and really boiled down it seems I'm against Gen X and later nothing further from the truth it's just honestly hits Gen X first, they actually did nothing wrong per sea. They was the first to have a population decline.

The wording above is really misleading the US general (Congressional) fund owes SSA over 80Trillion in repayments and interest. That is not debt for SSA the Congress played a shell game since the 1980's era to now today borrowing from the excess collection from the SSA payment over the years. And what should have been a simple cross loan with the SSA finally was shuffled until it reached the General fund available to Congressional purse, they assumed the debt and have yet to repay the debt in full. Had it been left alone it (SSA) would have been secured and not referred to as a pay as you go that many like to say as a term that is commonly used today.
Without those newly born taxpayers they can't repay (gen x if just 50 % of the abortions had been left for adoption there would have been over 5 million extra taxpayer, and that number doubles and triple for every generation after that. ) just calculate roughly the tax revenue of 5 million more tax payers, then the influx increasing of 1 to 2million on top of that annually would allow for repayment possibly. Or greatly added to lessening of the short fall as each taxpayer has to both fund the replenishment of their individual burden and fund the repayment of the notes going back to 1983 I believe.

while it is true that the legislation was under POTUS Regan one still has to remember that during his terms he had a democratic controlled HR and Senate. so which side came up with the grand Idea ??? Well it had to reside with the dems more than the Republicans but if I recall the votes correctly. If POTUS had vetoed it there was enough vote to override the veto. so yeah I'm pretty sure POTUS did it with the understanding that they owed him one favor for signing.

All of us alive today that lived and worked through the 1980's and beyond until the present should remember that the US saving bond drives dwindled in the mid 1980's. go figure... why do a drive when billions are sitting in a coffer that no one watches and we the congress has oversight no one else it is a great racket and it performed by a individual would be illegal in all 50 states......

actually it was, the first recipients was the elderly during the depression as the American people thought it was shame the conditions the elderly was forced into because of the depression coupled with the dust bowl. and yeah from what I recall of my elders memory (verbal history telling) of that era it was a tough time for all

" recall of my elders memory (verbal history telling) of that era it was a tough time for all" Only AFTER the Roaring 20s. Plenty of tough times before that.
