Stainless Steel barrel break in

I had just won an olympic arms .204 ruger AR with a stainless Steel barrel as a door prize for a coyote tournament. My question is it really nessasary to go through the long drawn out barrel break in process for a stainless barrel, that I read on their website.

I've been the one shot, clean, etc,,, break in process in the past and then, I've gone out and bought the least expensive FMJ military ammo that I could find and shot 100 rounds before cleaning...I can't say that one practice is better than the other...

Since yours is a .204, you are stuck with factory or handloads, but regardless, my .204 AR didn't get any special break in, but it's a custom XX Match grade barrel and is exceptionally accurate from the first round..

I've read reports that indicate that barrel maker promote the idea with the hopes that you will wear out the barrel quicker with all the scrubbing, but don't know that it isn't an internet myth...

Unless you are paying for a hand lapped custom made barrel, most will have microscopic tool marks in the surface that have to be 'smoothed' out or 'burnished' before real accuracy potential is achieved...

Typing in EXACTLY what I said and EXACTLY how I said it, I get 10 pages of search results. If you rephrase the sentence a few times, you can probably get 10x the results I got.

My barrel break in is always the same... And goes EXACTLY like this...On a full moon night ( usually in January), build a large fire of hard wood.. Then at exactly midnight.. with rifle in one hand , I juggle three neutered male chipmunks with the other, while dancing in only my hunting boots, in a counter clockwise direction for 3 minutes... there ... simple as that and works every time.. they shoot ragged holes..!!

Good luck.!!

Sorry in advance, but the search function on this website is severely lacking. Even if doing the "advanced" search and you check it to show results in the subject only, you still get pages of threads without your keyword in it. Since creating new threads to ask a question bothers some of the members here, maybe a 25 cent fee could be collected. Hopefully that can solve some of the degrading comments when people ask a question.

very few questions here can be asked that haven't been asked at some point before. I understand people can use the search function to find many answers, I do it myself. But I don't see the point of people always just saying use the search function and not answering questions. No one is begging you to reply to their threads. Maybe skip a few days of saying use the search function.

Let me tell you how this thread goes.

I say "it won't make any noticeable difference in a hunting rifle".

The next guy says "I do it to every rifle I own and they all shoot 1/4 MOA all day long"

The next guy says "1/4 MOA all day long? Wow that's impressive! Here we go again."

The next guy says "The manufacturers all say that they recommend it and they know best, so I'm going to do it."

The next guy says "They recommend you do it in hopes that you burn your barrel up faster and have to replace it."

The next guy says "Technically you don't burn up the barrel, it's the throat that goes first."

The next guys says "Didn't Gail McMillan even admit that it was worthless to break in."

The next guy says " No, I believe it was G David Tubb, even though he sells a breakin product"

The next guy says "Stainless is irrelevant to break in procedure." Even though we are WAAAY past that in the conversation. So everybody ignores him.

The next guy says " Well, it does make my rifle easier to clean"

The next guy says "You have to burnish the tooling marks out of the barrel in order to get the best accuracy, and shooting it is how it's done".

The next guy signed up yesterday and says "I'm glad this topic came up, I've been trying to find this out for weeks and came up with nothing" again ignored.

The next guy is Catshooter and he says "If your spending an afternoon shooting and cleaning, shooting and cleaning, you're a fool. A new barrel doesn't shoot better as it ages regardless of ritual." And I laugh.

In the end, nothing gets answered definitively. But we do memorize how it goes down. I typed all of this and it took some time to do.

Or I could just type "Type in stainless barrel break in into the PM google search engine and read until your heart's content". And he'll get a 1000 results just like mentioned above. Which is more efficient?

I am talking about the PM Google search engine at the top of the page. It looks like a Google bar but is underneath that first banner. It is NOT lacking in any way and you WILL find what you're looking for. You may have to rephrase your question once or twice and you may have to use correct spelling of the english language, but you WILL find what you're looking for.
