Stainless steel.. good or bad?

i had a remmy ultramag...had a hut on my right-of-way...
a buck came out 100 yards out..the sun was coming up behind it..the light bounced of the barrel throught the scope...
you couldn't see anything.....also it changed poi more than a blued barrel...in different weather..why they did it i have no idea...got blued barrels and black plastic stocks and they dont move anywhere...
no deer...

Nothing better IMO. I've sworn off buying blued guns for the most part and am looking to upgrade (yes, it's an UPGRADE) a couple of my blued guns.

Say What?? Sun shining on your barrel changed the POI? Sorry, but sounds like excuses for missing a deer at 100 yards.

I don't know what the [beeep] you just said but I have several rifles that are stainless and have never had a problem with them shining are you sure your not talking about chrome?

Most custom barrel makers think that their SS barrels are slightly better because the blanks are slightly more uniform than the chrome moly blanks. I have no idea if this is true but it is what most of them say.

Its just a matter of corrosion resistance and if you like the look.
I would think the humidty of GA might justify the added cost.
Here in bone dry CA my dads guns have been in the closet since the 60's with no oil or care and they barely have any rust on them at all and still shoot great.
Whatever one you choose you can always paint it.

you ever been looking strait into the sun with one through the scope..i was at one end of the cut gas line the deer at the middle and the rising morning sun exactly strait at the end of the right away only happened once in my life...took my nephews 223 stevens with a blued barrel no longer than 3 minutes later...and could see some with my hand acting as a shade...picked up the 700 sun hadnt moved much and it was still the same i couldnt shade it to get a shot if that deer came back out for nothing...
20 minutes later i could see fine..the odds of ever having to shoot strait into the sunlight are far and few...and the bright sun in deer season that early..is far and few...but my nephews 300 dollar stevens with a 30 dollar scope could have made the shot...
it looked as someone held a piece of white paper in front of the scope...like i said thats what happened..

Nothing I like more than the classic good looks of a polished blue steel action in a finely grained satin finished wood stock. BUT...
I use my rifles in all weather, and hate to have to remove a barreled action from a stock to remove the water that can run down between the action and stock. With a stainless action and a synthetic stock, I don't have to worry so much about a little residual moisture damaging a rifle.
If I have a non bead blasted stainless action I simply wrap the stainless barrel with camo tape. Works for me.

The sun shining in your scope has nothing to do with any type of metal. I was mearly the sun shining in your scope. Ever drive a car and the sun is rising/setting over the road you are on. If you have drivin much,I'm sure this has happened. The sun glares off your windshield making it very tuff to see. Don't matter if the car is blue or red.
A sun shade on your scope can help with the glare trouble.
