staking road kill deer for bait

I read a few posts on this but most seemed like guys used dead cows out west. My buddy and i have staked a few dead deer in fields and hunted over them but they seem to only come in really late at night. anyone else in new york do this? Does it work to yip, howl,kiyi to bring them in at night. also read using crow calls draw them in during the day. headed up this weekend to hunt, my buddy put a deer out 2 days ago for them to find with trail camera on it so we know when they come but most of the time random times.
We have been after this big guy this year.

Got suprised crow hunting a few times in the day time here in Pa. The WT baby crow distress brings in coyotes and fox in the day time. Everytime they came in I had cheap #8 shot in and there were 30 to 40 yards. And my friend killed 1 out of a double in the end of summer that came into it. Keep your bait out away form the woods. If you trap you can have a well setup and running bait pile that you can average around 8 to 12 coyotes off of in Febuary when its cold. Also dont overlook making a few fake dirt hole sets it does not take much lure to bring them in to much scares them.

Last week I setup and called one in over a dead buck that had been hit by a car on my buddies property. There were already tracks around it and the arse was chewed up so I knew they had been there. Needless to say it came in when I was packing up, I shot, I missed. I used territorial calls, thinking it would make them think there was another coyote stealing their food.

There is some good info in the main predator forum about setting up battery operated motion sensors over a bait pile that will alert you while your sitting in the comfort of your house or car. So your not sitting out there all night waiting for them
 
just my take. If you plan on calling them to you, stay back a couple hundred yards and let the call do the work. dead deer work great for holding them in an area and they generally won't be far if they're actively hitting it. unless your approach is perfect you stand a good chance in getting busted
 
We have a primos double bull blind set up that we leave out that's 100 yards from bait on big hay field. Dogs usually cone from swamp? at bttom of field. Its around 600 yards to swamp from the tent. So should we just be quiet with no calls hit the foxpro every 20 minutes or so?
 
That is a beautiful looking coyote, best of luck. Here in Pa it is illegal to pick up road killed deer for bait. I know of guys that were fined for doing it.

I've baited quite a bunch here in NY. I used to sit long hours in a ladder stand at night watching bait. I will tell you that your approach to the stand does matter. They will likely approach the bait from downwind so they can scent check it for danger or other coyotes. Try to plan your approach so they won't cut your tracks/scent. It's their mating season, so they also have love on the brain. They can cover a dozen miles in one night, so a howl every now and then could help, although I never had success with calling over bait.
I usually like to keep my bait close to thick cover so they can feel secure. I place bait on a snowy backdrop so that a light is not needed. Keep movement/noise to a minimum.
The colder it is out, the better. They need more nourishment in cold weather. Good luck
 
sat last night 7-11 had lots of coyotes howling within 200 yards but couldnt see down the hill and no dogs came to the bait. went back this morning and called but no luck. had a dog on camera at 618 yesterday on deer bait but i didnt get in the stand til 7. going out in a little bit to see how tonight plays out.

here are some pictures off the bait pile. that golden eagle is pretty awesome looking they ate the whole hind end out of the deer. sat saturday night had them call we hunted all day sunday with no luck but i called one in on monday morning at 630 am had to take a shot at it on the run around 150. hit far back with 223 got some brown gut splatter but dog ran into thick briars and i never found it.

I know a area on a state park where they dump the road kill deer for that county(at least they did a few years ago) I have always considered staking it out.

I have used dead deer for bait there in Ohio. It has not worked more than it has.
