Started a new Rifle Build

This fall I was visiting with my gunsmith, Billy Tierce of Utica MS, and he was showing me a personal gun that he had built for himself in 7mm Remington Ultra Mag. I commented that it was exactly what I would like to have. After a few more conversations I talked him into selling it to me! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif I took it to Missouri and Kansas and killed two nice whitetails with it (Both DRT) and a coyote at 353 yards (laser rangefinder). This rifle seems to be pure magic. It is a Remington 700 action that he skeltonized and fluted the bolt. Action blueprinted and trued, titanium firing pin, factory trigger worked to just under 2 lbs. It is a High-tech ultra light stock that is dipped in mossy oak break-up. Pillar bedded action and free floated barrel. This is a 26 inch Remington barrel (I would have started with a Lilja, but this shoots so well I cannot mess with it) that he fitted with a Gentry Quietbrake. The barrel and action were treated with Green-T teflon coating by W.E. Birdsong and Assoc.

I liked this rifle so much that this week I dropped off a 700 action and a Lilja #4 conture 1-10 twist .338 barrel for him to start another build. I told him that I want it to be a twin to this rifle, but in .338 Remington Ultra Mag. He is also fitting it with an extra long magazine box for overlength bullets and a Tubb oversized recoil lug.

These are not benchrest rifles, but carry weight sporters. They weigh about 7 lbs and are balanced perfectly. I am building the .338 for Elk, an African Plains game hunt that I am planning and a Trip to Alaska to hunt big bears. That and I just want a big boomer! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

The 7 RUM is very plesent to shoot with the break and groups between 1/2 and 3/4 with factory 140 Ultra Corebond Ammo. I'll start playing with some handloads in the next month or so.

Here is a look at the 7 RUM: (Pics of the Twin in a few Months)

Good looking rifle. I like how the action is skeletonized. Its adds a good touch to the action. Be sure and post some pics of the new rifle and maybe some shot groups.

That's interesting work he did on the action. I shoot a Remington 8mm mag, but if I was building a new elk and Alaska rifle the 338 Ultramag would be exactly the cartridge I would be looking at.

Thanks for showing pix of that great gun.

The finish is W.E. Birdsong's Green-T on the barrel and action. Bolt is done in his Black-T as well as trim and all internal parts. This is a teflon based coating that coats all internal and external parts excluding the bore. It is used exclusivly by the special forces, FBI and several other government agencies. The US military has tested it to 7700 hours in salt spray with 0 corrosion. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif You just wipe it off with a damp cloth and go! It is also self lubricating. It is the bomb! Birdsong is here local and I already had about 10 guns done in it. My gunsmith is the one who turned me on to it and he already had this one done in Green-T. He says that it is the best finish in the world. Here are a few more done with it: (Sorry, I'm like an old woman who someone asks about her grandkids, out comes the pictures) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

NICE!!!!!!
I especially like the straight flutes on the bolt.
I've never been a fan of the spiral flutes on bolts or barrels, but that looks good.

Thanks for sharing.

Very nice, T!
just make sure you grab the correct twin when you go to Alaska /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
That 7RUM is no slouch though...

Junki,

That doesn't count the scope.

Knock'emdown,

So far I have been most impressed with the 7RUM, It hits like the Hammer of Thor. Deer look like they are hit with lightning! I have shot a 7 Rem mag for years and there is no comparison. I shot a coyote setting and looking at me at 353 yards, hit him in the chest right below the chin. Let me tell you it is NOT fur friendly! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Totch94,

That is a sharp looking rifle for sure.
You are going to love the 338 RUM! It hits like a freight train. I have a 700 LSS that shoots .5 MOA with the Remington factory barrel. Let me know if you need some load data and I will help you out.

BTW, Nosler has announced that they will be offering a
250 gr Accubond for 2008. The BC is .575 which will make it a hammer for long range.
