This fall I was visiting with my gunsmith, Billy Tierce of Utica MS, and he was showing me a personal gun that he had built for himself in 7mm Remington Ultra Mag. I commented that it was exactly what I would like to have. After a few more conversations I talked him into selling it to me! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif I took it to Missouri and Kansas and killed two nice whitetails with it (Both DRT) and a coyote at 353 yards (laser rangefinder). This rifle seems to be pure magic. It is a Remington 700 action that he skeltonized and fluted the bolt. Action blueprinted and trued, titanium firing pin, factory trigger worked to just under 2 lbs. It is a High-tech ultra light stock that is dipped in mossy oak break-up. Pillar bedded action and free floated barrel. This is a 26 inch Remington barrel (I would have started with a Lilja, but this shoots so well I cannot mess with it) that he fitted with a Gentry Quietbrake. The barrel and action were treated with Green-T teflon coating by W.E. Birdsong and Assoc.
I liked this rifle so much that this week I dropped off a 700 action and a Lilja #4 conture 1-10 twist .338 barrel for him to start another build. I told him that I want it to be a twin to this rifle, but in .338 Remington Ultra Mag. He is also fitting it with an extra long magazine box for overlength bullets and a Tubb oversized recoil lug.
These are not benchrest rifles, but carry weight sporters. They weigh about 7 lbs and are balanced perfectly. I am building the .338 for Elk, an African Plains game hunt that I am planning and a Trip to Alaska to hunt big bears. That and I just want a big boomer! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
The 7 RUM is very plesent to shoot with the break and groups between 1/2 and 3/4 with factory 140 Ultra Corebond Ammo. I'll start playing with some handloads in the next month or so.
