Starting your stand by Howling? Does it increase or decrease your chance of success? Bad Idea?

I agree around mating season it more effective for me.I have gotten up and not noticed a coyote sitting behind me just listening to the howls before so its good to look behind you before you move lol

I've been coyote hunting for 11 yrs. I've always started each of my sets with a non-dominant howl of some kind, something like a "hey how's it going? " anybody out there?" Just to let coyotes know there's another coyote around. I believe it's make them more comfortable. I'll do two sets of 3 howls, about 1.5-3 mins apart. If I get an answer, I'll hit a distress call, something high pitched. Gets em fired up!
Does it increase or decrease my chances? Not sure, as I never tried a set with out a howl to start. Maybe this fall I'll give it a whirl. I've seen others do it without a howl and success is just as good. I think it's your preference. But if you're gonna howl, practice, practice, practice. As a broken howl can be a deal breaker.
Good luck.
