steel shot for yotes

I have a SP 10ga i have been using Fed. Factory lead copper platted BB's 2 1/4 oz load with a custom choke and they work good. I have also have #4 Buckshot for it too and it works. I have steel shot in BBB's and T's i have for geese but never tried them on coyotes. VM

I'm trying to interpet here. What is it, " splaying pellets all over ", or, " crazy tight choke "? I can't figure out if you're saying "rudy kazoo turkey chokes" spread the pattern, or, if "crazy tight" means they shoot too tight and you can't hit a close coyote because of the small pattern. Seems a contradiction... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Penetration is the name of the game? Like what daddy was doing to mommy = offspring? Mr. Buker, tell me what you know about T shot steel penetration on a coyote at, lets say...30 yards? How many coyotes have you killed with a. a shotgun, and b. in your life? In my "humble" opinion, penetration is not the name of the game, the name of the game is confidence and knowing the gun/load that you are shooting. I have probably only shot between 200-300 coyotes with T shot steel, so I probably dont know how to answer tiercel45's "question" regarding the use of steel shot. What I can say, for someone that probably has never shot a coyote with steel shot to give their "opinion", and it is very negative at that, probably isnt very confident in their shooting ability!
I would say that it did take a long time for me to find the "perfect" load/choke, etc for my 10. I finally settled on buying cases of Winchester Drylok T, and it is a killer for me.
For me to suggest steel to anyone, I would...only if they have "confidence" in their shooting ability and gun.
I chose steel because lead was not readily available as Mr. Chris Brice stated so well.
HeviShot "Dead Coyote" would be the simple answer for the person in doubt....but then, who would you blame if a coyote is not killed at 30 yards...the gun, the choke, the load....hmmmm or the one pulling the trigger?
Larry Timmons, one of my favorite loads is BB lead, but i just lost interest in trying to find it for my 10. Availability of steel shot is why I chose to go with the load that I have, and it has worked great for me.
I shot a coyote out of a plane once with my 10ga with T steel, and they were laughing at me because I was going to shoot that load/gun...They quit laughing when I slammed that running dogs face into the ground on the first pass at 30 plus yards..., and he didn't get up and run off!
Les

P.S. If I were to bring 10 dead yotes that were shot with T shot steel to your doorstep Mr. Buker...would you be able to tell me if there was "steel shot penetration?"
Humor Me!

Well I have no idea about steel T, I do however would like to know about 3 1/2 12 gauge OO buck, I ccan't find "dead coyote" here, but the rack is always stuffed full of this.

I figured it would work just fine, but what about range and chockes, I heard you can use a turkey choke but I was a little affraid to try it until I asked.

I can say I have blown the chest feahters off geese with steel T and watched them fly a ways before they found the scene of the crash /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hummm..., seems like this isn't so much about steel shot anymore. Old history perhaps? In any case, I'm wondering why more folks don't order ammo online? Years ago when I set up my Benelli and tried a whole bunch of chokes and loads, once I found the best performing load, I ordered a couple of cases of the stuff online. My local shop doesn't stock much Federal ammo (Federal Premium No. Four Buck 3" .12 gauge), and didn't seem all that interested in ordering it for me. I could save quite a bit of money online, it was easy to order, and delivered right to the door in three days. I do this with lots of ammo, handgun, rimfire, rifle and shotgun when necessary. Manytimes local stores don't carry a super large assortment, especially of premium type ammo that is expensive. Just curious why more guys don't consider this as an option? BTW, I'm asking sincerely and not to stir the pot. I've had and seen enough internet drama here lately to last me awhile. Also, Les J. I hope talks go well with The Men's Channel, I have Dish T.V. and would welcome your show. We lost the Outdoor Life Network Channel awhile back and though it's not great I hate loosing any outdoor programming. That leaves The Men's Channel and The Outdoor Channel only. ESPN has has a little outdoor programming. Huh, I guess you know all that, anyway, get your show on DISH!

I have shot a couple of yotes and one bobcat with 31/2 inch magnum - F steel shot in my Benelli with Imp. Cyl choke. It did a good job. The longest shot was under 40 yards.

Yes Les hope to see your show on DISH. ANd hope one day i am 1/4 the coyote caller you are. Hope you make another video. The first one was GOOD VM

I'll agree that steel shot is going to get harder and harder to find, it's on the way out. The only reason I have any at all is I bought a box when the local hardware store was going out of business. I never waterfowl hunt but a box of 3" T shot for $4.50 was to hard to pass up.

And no, I won't buy much ammo over the net. That would take planning ahead for heavens sake! I tend to relize I need ammo at 10 pm the night before and make a mad dash for the 24 hr Walmart.

Nobody has had any input on what is the cheapest, useable ammo I can buy at Walmart on the late night runs? Anyone? Please?

Enjoy,
Chris

Chris I think I can relate to that as well.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Steel does pattern much tighter than lead. The rule of thumb I used to tell people when working behind the gun counter for some years was to move up from size 4 shot to 2 in steel for ducks. Instead of 2 go to BB or BBB for Geese. And if you used to shoot it in a full choke modified would give you about the same pattern. We would explain that you need to move up in shot size because of the weight difference in steel versus lead. I know that when steel shells first came out they were slower. Increased velocity has helped their effectiveness on game. The companies making it have made some significant improvements in velocity. Shooters complained because they had to learn to adjust to the new loads. Lead would allow a larger lead on game due to the cone of shot being more strung out, whereas steel would not string out the same way. Am I surprised by Les Johnsons results? Yes. All I have heard from duck/goose hunters for years is how terrible steel is. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif But no one likes change. If we all found out today no more beer only Mike's hard lemonade, we would have alot of negative things to say as well. I don't like Mike's hard lemonade. Where did that come from? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif Anyway, as always, I am learning something new here on PM. I am not sure I will change my #4 buck load any time soon, but there are options. Good Hunting- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gifMH
