Which one would you choose if either? Just curious as to what other people think of these two guns. Also do you think a .243 is too much for fur? not really a fan of either brand but looking to buy a new rifle for next year if i can afford it when the time comes and these are about the two cheapest brands. Let me know what you think.

I'll bite.

The Mossy I've only held...never shot it. But I wasn't impressed with it. Plus, I didn't like the limited caliber choices.
But that doesn't mean it's a bad gun, or won't do the job.

The Stevens is a butt-ugly gun, but works like a champ, IMO.
I've owned 2 of them...a .223 (which I will not part with, it's my coyote gun...period).
The other was a .243 which I had to part with. Although I will own another.
For the cost, the Stevens can't be beat, IMO.

I have both and I like my Mossberg better. Now that being said, alot of that has to do with the fact that when I got my ATR from Walmart it was $244 for a gun with a wooden stock making it quite abit better looking then my stevens. It is extremely accurate. They have an ER Shaw a barrel (button rifled) just like the savage. My stevens is also very accurate and has some adjustablilty of the trigger. You can also if you wanna spend money on the stevens get alot of after market parts. Now if you gonna buy a stevens and put a bunch of aftermarket parts on it you might as well find a Walmart and have them order you a Rem 700 sps for $325 or a savage with a Accutrigger for $350. I know I'm gonna hear a hundred people say BAHHH!!!, stevens is way better but, I would really say it's probably a toss up between the mossberg and the stevens. Both have alot of plastic parts and about the same quality of action.

If your looking for fur friendly then neither the 22-250 nor the 243 is. Most folks that are interested in harvesting hides use either the 17 Remington or the 204 Ruger. Exits can be dramatic with the 243 or the 250.

The 17 is no magic bullet either. Called in a red fox one night and my friend shot it with a 17 Rem at about 30 yards. It just turned around and trotted off into the woods. My friend swore he had hit it, so the next day I went back and found it 50 yards into the woods. Fist sized exit wound straight through the chest taking out 3 ribs.

There are no majic bullets. You want to collect fur, use a trap.

Stevens is what I have experince with and love mine. I have one in .223 and as was said previously I WILL NEVER GET RID OF IT. I also have several friends with the Stevens in 250 and it is also very accurate. I have only heard one person say that they hated the Stevens due to accuracy. The rest say they hate them cause they are ugly. But a $10 paint job to camo colors and problem is solved.

I don't think that the ugliness of the Stevens stock has anything to do with the color of it.

When it comes to the Stevens arent they pretty much a savage without the acu-trigger. Atleast thats what ive been told, i havent done enough looking to know.

This is getting off subject a little, of your initial question, but here's just more "food for thought." How about rebarreling a Stevens 200 to 6x45. Sharpshooter Supply has the barrels. Easy loading too - just simply neck up 223 brass to 6mm. Of course, you're looking at more money for the barrel (about $300), but the 6x45 is a pretty decent cartridge, and due to lower velocity as compared to the 243, it doesn't tear gaping wounds in the offside, but still hits hard and penetrates well. It's a great calling cartridge, in my opinion. I use 75 gr. Sierra HPs in my Dtech.

Go with the stevens you will love the gun! I have two and would never get rid of them. And for a calling gun the stock dosent bother me at all.

I have a Savage model 16 stainless (variant of the 200). Light conture barrel ........... can I get this in 6 x 45???

I'm not sure Sleddogg, I contacted Sharpshooter Supply sometime back, specifically inquiring if barrels are available for the Stevens 200. The reply was "yes," they are, and that not all barrels they have in stock are listed on the website. At least for the Stevens 200, a switch barrel is an easy thing to do.

You might want to give them an e-mail and inquire. I personally think the barrels will work, since the Savage and Stevens are much alike.

I love my Stevens 200 .223. It shoots 60 gr. V-Max really well. But, I love the 6x45 round too, so I have considered getting another Stevens and having it barreled to the 6x45. That way I'll have two loves in my life.

Our local gun shop carried both those rifles in several calibers. Then one day all he had wss a bunch of Stevens. The shop owner said he had a few of the Mossbergs come back (broken) and none of the Stevens. The owner went on to explain the Stevens were made well, accurate, and the one Stevens that did come back was promptly taken care of by the Savage/Stevens customer service and repair dept. I have seen both rifles. The Stevens is the beter built rifle, IMO,of course.
