Stevens 200 stock.

Hey you guys, i'm new to the site and have a question hopefully someone can answer. There seems to be alot of knowledge on this place.

I just bought a new Stevens 200 in .223 and the stock feels like a rubermaid tub or some tuperware. The forend is pretty flexy and bendy and I was wondering is there was a cheap easy way to stiffen it up a bit.

Thank you

A quick search should provide a few posts from people who have stiffened up the fore end. I remember posts of people who created a small channel and added a few arrow shafts with some epoxy or bedding compound. Should do the trick.

I have done the things SkDave mentioned and they work. Normally I have been using two pieces of 1/4" or 3/8" round stock inleted into the forend and covered with one of the various epoxy bedding materials on the market. Not the best solution, but it will work till you can afford a better stock.

i've been contemplating a 200 for awhile but the stock has
concerned me.
Then I was thinking about the new Savage Edge but not seeing
any reviews or actually seeing a rifle concerns me.

So, hard telling what I will end up with.
Heading to a large gun show this weekend.
Weather permitting that is.

JoeyQuacks,
Welcome to Predator Masters!

How's your new Stevens shooting? Any grouping problems? Shots "spraying" left, right, up or down? If not, why worry about it? You may be attempting to fix something that's not broken.

I had a Savage .22-250 that had one of the early Ryanite (synthetic) stocks. It touched one side of the barrel and was tight up against the action on the other side. Everyone said that I needed to take a Dremmel and cut it back.

I didn't care much for their advice, as this rifle would shoot 5 shots inside a dime at 200 yards @ 3855 f.p.s., using a 55gr. V-Max.

All I'm saying is, IF it's shooting good, I'd leave it alone.

I put a Boyds Thumbhole on mine, however, after taking off the stock stock and actually trying to bend it, it's pretty darn stiff. I really thought it was going to be flimsy when I took it off, but I did not find that to be the case. Perhaps the 243 stock is stiffer? I dunno. It would be a breeze to load the stock with bondo, and smooth it out.

I just make sure theres no contact with the barrel about 1/3 back from the forend tip on a stevens. I don't bed the action, just torque action screws

some guy's relieve the tang area also.

some go bell carlson aftermarket and then maybe bed'em.

to me it takes something away from a cheap rifle if ya replace half the parts after ya buy it unless your just buy'n it for the action.

Stevens = slick the trigger and spray bomb your camo! Rain, mud, snow and beat the tar out of it!

Tim Neitzke,
I sold it to a friend in the Marine Corps, that still has it, so I could purchase my Rock River Arms A4.

It was a groundhog killing machine! Wish I still had it, at times, but dearly love my A4.

I recently purchased a Stevens model 200 in .25-06 and am hoping it's as accurate.

I just bought one in 7MM REM MAG and the fore end does seem to be a little soft. No action will be taken though until I've sighted it in and gave it a good work out. IF I were to guess? Its a stevens-savage and it will shoot just fine, like the other 2 savages and 1(very old)stevens we own; with no messing around.
