Steven’s Model 24

This post must’ve been an omen…

I just went on arms list in my city yesterday and found some guy selling new primed 22 hornet brass, projectiles, factory ammo, and k hornet dies cheap. He lived about 20 minutes from me. It said he would trade for 44 mag, 357, or 45 acp ammo. I sent him a message and asked him if he was interested in Cast bullets. He said yes, so I horse traded him 475 Cast I powder coated and hornady gas checked. I had them divided up and color coated in one grain increments. I grabbed a couple piles of them from out in my garage that I’ve casted up over the last four or five years of massive overstock just because I have fun casting them up. I grabbed two plastic containers out in the garage in a bag of hollow points. Almost 825 and told him he could pick and choose what he wanted. He grabbed the 220 count bag of blue Lee 300 grain .430’s, a 109 count bag of lee 300 grain FN .452’s, and the bag of 144 Lyman devastator hollow points in various colors. Said that would work in trade for his 650 jacketed projectiles. I had a bag of 500 ACME 9mm in hytec green my buddy gave me I traded for 150 new hornady primed brass in cases. My buddy bought those Cast Boolits when panic by was going on and as soon as he got his hands on jacket and Boolits, he didn’t want to mess with them and gave them to me. I knew I was never going to use them because I had a Lee 9 mm mold that I was already using an in action. So at least I found a good home for all my stuff that I would’ve never used. I’ve switched to hollow points in Cast Boolits for everything over the years. I still have a bunch of 452’s and . 430’s interested? So I ended up with 450 Remington 45 grain HPs. The fat round nose HP’s meant for hornets, Also a box of 100 each of 35 grain and 40 grain vmax In the deal! Thry also had three boxes of factory loaded ammo that was offered to me for 50 bucks, which is a smoking deal, but I passed on it because I have more bullets, primers, a small rate flat box of 22 hornet cases already in hand, and powders then I know what to do with for hornet now.

he only wanted $75 for all 650 bullets and $45 for the primed cases. I would’ve snagged both of those up for cash regardless, if he didn’t want to trade as cheap as they were in as hard as it is to get your hands on him right now. I know I should have bought the 150 rounds of factory loaded ammo for $50 but I didn’t think it’s going anywhere and tax time is here.

my score…

some of the cast I traded him for…

I’ve shot all three of the cast bullet choices i traded him in my 450 bushmaster and 44 magnum rifles. The bushmaster shot MOA and my 44 magnum rifle was shooting almost half MOA With the hollow points all with healthy loads of H110 and lil gun.

I just get carried away when I’m casting up Boolits and then I go through the motions and powder, coat and gas check them and set them aside. lol. Then I end up getting a new mold and never use all the ones I have casted up like the ones I traded. Glad someone got excited about them and I found a home for them and got some good toys back in trade.

Always thought it was so neat, guys like yourself that cast your own bullets. Pretty sweet.

Started about 5 years ago. It pretty rewarding to shoot deer and everything else with a bullet you made. My 35 Remington marlin 336 will shoot all in one little hole with 200 grain cast hollow points with max load of 40 grains of varget with an average velocity of 2087 fps. It drops deer like a 243 with 70 grain ballistic tips. Still shoots MOA at 200 yards. They can be as accurate short range (under a few hundred yards) as jacked hunting rounds. Just depends on how much time and energy you want to put into casting and playing with the load. I varmint hunt with my 77/44 and cast hollow points along with deer hunting with it as well. I have a few loads that shoot sub moa with it. It cuts nuisance garden rabbits in half at 150 yards. lol

My .358 200 grain hollow points. The load shoots as tight as some of my predator guns at 100 yards!

and an example of a 150 yard rabbit hit with a 265 grain 44 mag hollow point cast bullet traveling at over 1750 fps. The 2 halves were probably a good 15 to 20 feet apart. I put them together for the photo.

jacketed 35 caliber bullets are always impossible to find and when they are they’re normally almost 2 bucks each it cost me about four cents apiece to make these and my time.

That would definitely be an achievement, and a good feeling. Harvesting with your own bullets, seeing the terminal performance and such. You’ve got a sweet set up, sure is cool

Here’s an example of the .358 hollow points do on a deer at 15 yards at 2100 fps. The 44 mag version at rifle velocity is alot less violent. I’m still experimenting with softer alloys for better expansion.

Bullet sized hole in and out the hide with a big hole in the ribs. It’s similar to Nosler ballistic tip performance.

I dunno if a feller could ask for more than that, especially for being home brew!
