Stevens, Savage or Remington?

My personal preference would be a savage, and I have a lefty that I love in a270. Personally had bad experience with Rem, but there are millions of good ones out there. Brother has a 223 savage model 10 that consistently shoots 100 yard .2 and .3 in groups. And he wants to sell oy if interested.

I have 3(4? Maybe 5?) savages. Back in the day I looked down on them thinking they were a 'budget' brand. After accidentally aquiring my first, testing with the 2nd, confirming with the 3rd... I like them

The axis/edge is their true 'budget' line. Another accidental purchase (I play around on gunbroker and more than once won when I shouldn't have) and I got an axis in 25-06. It's one of the best shooting rifles I've owned and weighs next to nothing. Best $200 rifle I own by far.

The 700 obviously has a history and a following, but I haven't seen the reason to spend the money and look to savage first. I just traded on my my 25-06 savages for a stevens .243 for a new build in .358 winchester. On a price for price the stevens is less than the savage but the action and the barrels are the same, which is what I care about. It's going to be shoulder numbing awesome!

it still surprises me on when others say they would rather have a savage...

Not looking for a fight, but I gotta ask. With all the recent threads about Remmy's on sale from 350ish for blued to 450ish for SS,,, just how inexpensive are these Savage's.
I'll admit that I haven't spent allot of time researching Savages, but from what I see from vendors like Buds etc., Savages aren't any cheaper. Matter of fact, the ones that would interest me like the LRPV cost every bit as much as a comparable Remmy.

The last SS Rem I bought was $435 at Sportsman's Warehouse. Dicks Sporting Goods just had a screamer for Black Friday. They coma and go, just keep an eye on the flyers and such.

Yea Johnny,,,, there's been a couple threads lately reguarding some smoking deals on 700's.
IIRC,, one member got a camo'd ADL with a starter scope for under four bills. I think it was at Dicks.
Seems like there was talk abot Cabelas running a sale on 700's too.

Like Shawn said,,, "ya gotta look for em, but they're out there".
I'm lucky in that my dealer will price match "almost" any thing out there.
Luck

Edit:
Here ya go Johnny

I was close. 349.00 after rebate for a camo'd rifle with 4-12 scope.
Pretty good deal concidering the added accuracy that comes with camo.

Ive been under 250 for the rifle alone on them all. I havent looked for remy, but in my killing time browsing havent seen a good deal on one either. I don seem to have any 'cheap' shops local.

Im very much a reslts based person, never seen a pretty gun or an ugly gun until ive been to the range with it.

Yea,,, I guess it has allot to do with what you're interested in on a day to day basis because I don't see any of the smoking deals on Savages I hear about either.
I does seem like their prices have gone up hand in hand with their popularity over the last few years though.
Course my beloved CZ's ain't the sleepers they were ten years ago either. LOL
Doesn't really matter cuz we all like what we like, but I had to ask when you said you've never seen the need to spend the money on a Remmy when they can indeed be had for the price of a Savage. Not every day though.

They used to be a lot less than the other brands, but they are now comparable in price except for the Axis/M200 entry lines which are usually around $300.
Like any other gun the least expensive way to go is buying used. Last Savage I bought from a guy on this site was $250 to use for my new build.

I'm leaning toward the a Remington 700. Whats a good one to start with? SPS or CDL? Like I said in the OP I'm planning on upgrading it. Does it even matter which one I start out with?

What are you planning to do with it?

Trigger, stock sooner then later and barrel at some point. I don't know a ton about what can be done other then that. I'm new to this, but interested that's why I wanna get something that I can work with.

If you are wanting to do upgrades, get an SPS and go for it. If you are wanting to go the berries right off the bat, get yourself a VSSF and enjoy.
