Steyr or Tikka?

All,

I am plotting my next rifle purchase, so it may be awhile,
but I am plotting /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I am a Tikka fan, with a fondness
for the M695/M595 series. I have a T-3, and it is very
accurate, has a great trigger, and is very smooth, action
wise. But there may be a bit too much "cost reduction"
plastic in them, and the one size action, kind of bugs
me. So with all of this Steyr talk, I did a little
web research, and a Stainless/Synthetic Steyr Pro Hunter,
looks pretty sweet, and not much more than a stainless
Synthetic T-3. So I have a few questions for Steyr
owners. First, is the Steyr trigger adjustable, and
how would you rate it as a factory trigger? Are
these rifles reliable, and how is their out of box
accuracy? As with Tikkas, I kind of expect to
adjust the trigger needing a bit of lightening, on
the force adjustment, and I start shooting tiny groups.
Is the Steyr similar, or is there accuracy work, like
bedding, trigger honing, etc. that needs to be done?
And finally, what kind of scope rings would this rifle
need. For what it is worth, I have the Tikka supplied
rings, in my "scope ring" pile, and have Warne Maximas
on the Tikkas. So buying good rings is not an issue,
but I don't recall seeing rings specifically for Steyr
rifles. What scope ring style works on Steyr rifles?

Incidentally, I am thinking either .243 Win, .260 Rem.
6.5x55, or 7mm-08, as a possible chambering. Something
in the 6mm to 6.5mm is probably going to be in the final
choice. If I can find a Tikka M595, in very good
conditions, that may eliminate this, "which brand" decision,
but if that search fails, after funds are available, then
it will be between a T-3, or a Steyr.

Thanks in advance for any igfo you may provide.

I went to the Steyr site and to east county guns and looked at prices.
I think I'll go with 4 Tikkas rather than one Steyr. They are cool looking tho.

You must have gotten some bad pricing. I found
Steyr Pro Hunters in stainless/synthetic for around
$750 or slightly less, and Tikka T-3s, in stainless/
synthetic for around $650.

If the Steyr has metal stuff, where the Tikka is plastic,
I might be temped to try one, given the other questions
have satisfactory answers.

None of those models are the models I am asking about.

PRO HUNTER!!! Is the model in question.

And for what it is worth, that isn't the model of T-3,
I was talking about, either. STAINLESS isn't $539

Thanks anyway.

Sorry, relax. I finally founds some PROHUNTER for 839.
Yup the stainless Tikka's (3weeks ago) were 579.
I have Varmit Tikka 223 and 22-250, 700 each
stainless 243,270,22-250,308, T3's 525 each 300 win mag.575
223 tactical 1200.00
still think the Steyrs look pretty cool, would like to handle one.
I just looked at a Stainless Tikka T3 in 30/06 for 480. new in box, this guy is going out of business 12/31, he had, 2-243,2 7mm08, 2- 270s, I think a 7mm mag of some kind, a 300 winny Laminated, not sure what else left.
If you want it I mail you his phone number

Bofire,

I am done hyperventilating /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif No problem./ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

That is a very good price on the T-3's. I had something
like that happen when I purchased my first Tikka. I
found a NIB Tikka M695 Stainless/Laminate, in .25-06 Rem,
for $485, at a gunshop, in trouble with the ATF, for
shoddy record keeping, and was being forced to close.
At the time, I did not realize just what a Tikka was,
with a Sako barrel, and a great trigger. I wish I would
have known, since there was a second Tikka in the shop,
which was a match to the one I purchased in the M595
model, in .243 Win. I kick myself to this day for
letting that one get away.

Thanks for the offer of the phone number. As it stands
right now, I am more interested in either a 99% M595,
or a Steyr Pro Hunter, than another T-3. Nothing wrong
with them. I have one, and kind of thrive on variety /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
So along with a new rifle, I want it to be
brand and/or a model I don't already have. And I still
haven't decided what chambering I want. I already have
a 6mm Rem. chambering in a semi-custom, so I am not
sure I am ready for a whimpy .243 Win, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
I might want to go with the .260 Rem. or a 6.5x55, again
for some variety. Oh, for all you .243 Win fans, PUHLEESE
no flames...That was a joke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I dont blame you Squeeze, those Steyr look really good and some smart folks on this site reccomend them.
I have never seen one in "real life" Nor have I got to see the up-scale Tikkas. Just T-3's. boohoo.poor me!

Until I saw prices on this board I had no idea they varied so widely accross the country.
Good luck and let me know how it shoots!!

I had a Steyr Pro-hunter in 25-06. I loved the rifle and it shot tiny little bug holes off the bench. The one thing I didn't like about it was the two stage trigger. I really don't like TS triggers on my hunting rifles. The palm swell is really nice and the stock felt "right" when bringing it up to shoot, but it's a little slick. If I would have kept the rifle I would have added something to the palm swell for added grip. And yep, I hate myself for letting that rifle go.

I own two T3's and also wonder about the "plastic" trigger guard. I wonder what exactly is it? It's obviously not regular plastic.

With literally thousands of T3 guns that have been purchased over the last few years, wouldn't we be hearing about any problems with it by now?

Also, the new Remington guns and the Benelli SBE and M2 have gone with the same material in their trigger assembly.

I prefer steel over plastic as well. However, I also understand that certain "plastics" can be just as strong as steel.

Either way, I am overly pleased with my T3 rifles!

I have Steyr and Tikka rifles and love them both. Unless they have changed, my Steyr's have awesome triggers out of the box that are better than anything else. You can adjust them but I have had no need too. Accuracy, they are the best out of the box rifle I have seen and have shot them all over 35 yrs or so. SBS rifles take Browning A-bolt bases but I put Pictany rails on mine so I can swap scopes around with using tact rings and a torque wrench. Another point is don't think you can shoot out a Stery barrel. I will see when the new 1 in 9 twist 22-250 comes out. Will be testing one.
