Stihl vs. Husqvarna chainsaw

I am in the market for a chainsaw and have narrowed down my search to the above manufacturers.

In particular I am considering the Husky 345, 351 & 55 or the Stihl 250 or 270.

Anyone have any comments on who makes the better saw or any experience with these saws?

I only plan on cutting a cord or two of firewood each year but also need a saw for clearing trails and downed trees while hunting.

Thanks for your input! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Royce, I've used several saws of both flavors. From a quality or user friendly point of view, the only difference I could find was the color.

I used my Husky 55 for the application you want, and was never disappointed. Years of trouble free service, as long as you do your part.

I wouldn't be able to choose one or the other, as they are both top of the line products.

I agree with Redfrog, and I too have use plenty of each brand. Both truley are the choice of professionals! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I would ask around your neighborhood and find out which dealership is closest and has the best reputation, if your lucky you'll find one the serves both. Not likely though, Stihl likes to have a Stihl store/franchise.

but if I had to vote... I'd vote Stihl.

I know a few proffessional loggers and they all use husky saws. I have had my husky saw for 10 years and it still works good. The chain brake and the anti-vibration handle are nice features to have. You won't regret it if you buy a husky.

I have had several Stihl chainsaws for years and they have always worked very well for me. I have to say I've never tried Husky, but then I've never needed to!

Stihl and Husky are both made by Electrolux.( I believe Electrolux also makes Poulan )
I have a Husky 55 for many years. It's all I have ever needed.I think Stihl would be just as good.

Royce, I was born with a chainsaw in one hand and a rifle in the other. I have been a timber faller from Northern California to Alaska and both saws are excellent. For what you have in mind, one won't stand out above the other in the area of performance (as far as I am concerned). Husky does have a nice suspension system which makes it a bit more user friendly. I personally use a Stihl 066 for everything from yard work to falling timber. AW

I have cut fire wood for a side income for the last several years. I have used both saws extensively.
Both are excellent. I think, that both in brand new or equal condition that the Husky is a little faster cutter, maybe the chain speed is higher(?), to my ear the husky runs a little slower rpm, seems to make power a little lower range. The Stihl seems to like to scream.
Husky weak point, I go thru two clutches per year, that is cutting about 120 cords a year, Stihl weak point ? I aint found it yet.

oh yeah, I gotta say, I hate the dang chain breaks!!! all the saws have em.
just my 2 cents.

Firewood? What's that? Clear a path while hunting? What's the matter, the cholla cactus too thick?

Oooooohh.. sorry, my bad, you guys are in states where it drops below 60 degrees during the winter.

I was in the same boat a few years ago. The Husky 55 was a little lighter and a coupple of cc bigger than the comparable stihl. Price was a little lower. If I had to do it again, I would go with the next model higher. A little more punch and the bar is a bit stronger. One thing I do like about the stihl is their chain is a higher quality compared to the oregon chain of the husky. I do admit, I never owned a stihl, so this is my opinion on the husky. I also heard they discontinued the 55 too.

I used my stihl wood boss to cut firewood for my old farmhouse for 17 years, plus alot of land clearing. In that time I went thru 2 bars and a bunch of chains. Thats it, never been back to the shop where I bought it. Still runs fine. No experience with the husky but I hear they are good too.

Ford, Chevy, Chevy, Ford, apples to apples how could one go wrong by buying either a Sthil or Husky? Service is always a nice sidebar to the purchase but I wouldn't think you would need it with either. I love my Stihl, never go to bed without it.

They are both good saws, but the only chain to use is the Stihl square corner chain. Much better than anything else on the market.

I have a 029 Stihl that has served me very well, but would agree Husky is also an excellent choice. Husky's seem to be a little louder to me and Stihl's are easier to carbon up. I would choose the one that seems to fits your hand and that has available parts in your area. You will be happy with either. Nikonut

I bought an 029 Stihl 10 years ago. I have cut firewood & cleared trees for 25 years. I have used a husky but nevered owned one. Since I am used to having a problem free stihl around I will stick with them for the future. Either would be fine.

Husky 365 here! More rpm than the comparable Stihl. We had a King off the hill event while clear cutting our rifle range. Guess who kicked ass. I use Sven (you know your a redneck if you name your saw) for everthing from felling 4ft maples to limbing. The weight to power and ergonamics is fantastic. I have challenged several Stihl dealers to race me through a log with the next size up of Sthil and they always get a red face and change the subject. Get right down to it though I would take into consideration the dealer you purchase from and how you will be treated for service if you need it

Tom T, welcome to the PM board! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Glad you found your way over. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif There's lots of stuff here to keep a guy occupied and a enough knowledgable pred hunters to get some interesting debates going. So pull up a stump and make yourself comfortable.
