I finally got around to tring a great set of calls that I purchased from a call maker I met here on our forum. Rudy is the man behind Stone Coyote Calls and he is a master at his art.
Sunday after another disappointing Saturday I made it out for what would be a very fun stand. It was 4pm as I came to the gate and parked my truck. I slipped through the fence and headed to the west down the fence row a couple hundred yards to where the land began to slope down to the creek bottom. I was still about 200 yards away overlooking a small pecan grove that I had seen coyotes chase squirrels in on several occasions.
I got set up with a good back drop. What little breeze there was coming straight in my face. I started off with some soft to moderate cottontail cries from Rudy's small cottontail call. After two series with no movement I decided it was time for a few more aggressive, pleading screams from the larger more raspy call. That was all it took.....two coyotes seemed to just bust out of the creek bottom headed through the pecans like it was a race. I was ready but not that ready....they were head just off to my right and I was going to have to move to get a shot off.
I moved and tried to bark at the same time.....opps.....mistake they both looked right at me then turned on the after burners. In seconds my chance had vanished back into the woods. "*#%$"
I sat a minute or two and decided to just get back on the big raspy call and see what happened. Waa-wha-waaaaa WAWAWA I pleaded with them to just come back for a second but no luck. Then I looked around to the south and just standing there like he had watched the whole thing was this young coyote. He seemed content to just watch, I lined him up for the shot but decide to squeak him one time with the little coaxer....just to see if he would come on over. He perked his ears up and started a slow trot through the pecan grove. He closed the distace to about 80 yards before deciding that BIG bush just did not look right and he came to a full stop. Through the scope I watched him move his head slightly side to side as if he just wasn't sure.....
I was sure as the cross hairs of the 4200 Elite lined up center of his chest a 55 grain Seirra Game King from my trusty 22-250 was sent center mass. It was lights out and he was Stone Dead.
You can find Rudy in the custom calls forum under badtothebone or Stone Coyote Calls. Give his calls a
try they are more than great looking .....the coyotes like them too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Thanks Rudy for a great set of calls.
