streamlight ultrastinger

on the hunting the night shift video, i saw randy, and randy using one of these. i was thinking of getting one since alot of our night hunting is from the ground. are they bright enough for looking for eyes? and where did they find a red lens for it??

yes they are bright enough to find eyes, but don't expect it to last all night. mine last about 1 1/2 hours constant light. the lense is a scope lens dyed red or dykem on it.

Yes, they are plenty durable (on par with the Mag Lite).

I use one as do many around these parts and I know that many (including Randy and myself) use a Butler Creek Blizzard Cap to fit over the end of the light. I just sprayed red Dykem over the inside of the lens and when I need a white light I just pop open the lens. Below is a pic of me shining my Ultra-Stinger at a coyote that Buker killed. You can make out the Butler Creek cap that is slipped over the end of the light.

I love mine since it has both the DC charger to use while I'm in the truck and the AC charger for when I'm at home.

BTW...I might have some reservations if you're using it as your primary shining light (sounds like you were thinking about it) It is REALLY bright but only holds a charge for about 60-80 minutes. Works good for finding downed game or for shining briefly to make sure nothing is trying to come in from your blind side. I just put it back on the charger after I use it each time after I get back in the truck.

Hope this helps you out!

Take care and God Bless,

Rusty

It would be a wonderful light to scan with. It's light weight and bright. But, like Rusty said, it doesn't hold a charge long. It's still the best light to go with and I think a person would be well served to get a few extra batteries to carry with you. They are spendy but nice.

By the way, in that pic, Rusty is pointing to the bullet hole in the coyote. Right between the blinkers!! LOL.

The Utra-Stinger is 75,000 cwp and works very well, one of the brighest flashlights I know of....costs around $140.00

They sell extra batterys, you can only buy from Streamlight, the batterys are sealed in a black sleve and cost around $50/70.00

I bought mine off the Mac Tools,Snap-on truck at work, you can find them on inter-net for less, there are two stingers the standard that is around 6 inchs long,50,000 cwp and the Ultra-stinger that is 12 inchs long.......And they have a kit to turn the 6 inch model to a Larger head and bulb to 75,000 cwp like the Ultra is.......

The 6 inch stinger will fit snugly in you jeans pocket where the 12 inch Ultra will fall-out every other step you take...............

I own 3 of them for work and Hurracanes.......the 6 inch stinger will last 1 hour and the Ultra will lase 1 1/2 hours on full charge, avarge charge time 6 to 8 hours when totally dead........

They also sell a speed charger for them, charges in an hour...

The kit come with the flashlight 2 chargers one 12 volt and 1 110 volt wall charger and mounting screws.....

I bought my Ultra-Stinger off of eBay with both the car charger and wall charger for around $90.00. You can also find batteries for the Ultra-Stinger on eBay for around $17.

I never pay retail, never. Hope this helps!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Yup, in the last year or so I've seen them come down in price. I've often seen the light, charger and battery for less than a hundred bucks. Extra batteries generally run about $35.00 each. You can be all set for less than $300.00

For $235.00 you could Own a LightForce 170 Night Hunter /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I bought my stingers around 5 years ago,I got them from the tool trucks Because when something breaks its there problem (not Mine)...........They cost more but when theres a problem (coustomer service) is what there all about.....

From a Tracker/Trailer Machanics point of view .. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif....Im sure there cheaper now, just like Micro-waves and Plasma- TV's

Good Hunting........... Have A Great day.......Rick /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Enough said..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I dont have a ultra stinger but a poly stinger.what is the difference between the lights. I believe the candlepower is the same. I only paid 60.00 for mine at bass pro along with a car charger. By the way I was wondering why that coyote had its eyes so open

The better to see you with!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Actually, he was surprised what a .17rem between the eyes will do. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The lightforce has it's place but in the case of a lone hunter with a shotgun, it's awfully hard to scan with a lightforce and then figure out how to shoot while holding it. The Streamlight is small enough that the shooting and lighting at the same time is not an issue.

The lightforce might be the best spotlight out there but it's not the best light in every situation.

Hi Bigben,

I think the differnce between stingers is ones Poly and the other ones are Alum. housing.......w/"O" rings for that drop in the bucket chance.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif.......

I have a poly for use with dye for refridgeration Leaks, I use on cars/trucks so if you touch a Hot lead you won't toast the computer by a power surge or get a back feed using yourself as a ground... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif.....as you would with an Alum. one

The power of 50,000 cwp is the same for both lights, if you bought the up-grade head and bulb for the stinger it would be 75,000 cwp...... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

RickH2, I have a poly mounted on the weak hand side of my Contender triple duce carbine as a backup light... How long will the batteries last with the upgrade head? Was that the 1.5 hrs you referred to, or was that with the standard head? I can only get about 60yds thru the scope with the red filter on the standard head, I'd like to stretch that out a bit.

Another question, maybe I should start a new thread, but, have any of you guys night hunted in the heavy timber or thick brush? (Doghair!) I live in some tough country, and I was wondering about that. The "halo" idea would only work in some places with the spotlight pointed skyward! It also bring up the question of constant light vs on/off. I'd like to get some input on hunting the NW steep and deep!

Hi Rainshadow1,

My stinger (poly)w/large head and bulb lasts around 3/4 hour full on and shines like the Ultra-stinger does at 75,000 cwp.........

The Ultra-stinger lasts 1 1/2 hours and shines around 100 yards and works like a mag lite also..........

I dont know if you own a 140/170 LightForce Night Hunter Light, but we sell a Diffuser Red lens that is for deep brush and thick trees and thickets........
