Stupid question: Can a layman build his own custom rifle?

Thanks! I guess I hadn't thought about availability. I was just thinking about a fast round. Like I said, don't need it. I've got my 243 to play with.

What is a custom rifle? some will say it is high end wood, deep rust bluing, precision fitting of triggers, bolts, barrels and sighting equip to make the rifle more beautiful and accurate. To me a custom rifle is one built to fit your needs and wants, some consider that Bubba'd.

THAT is a great looking rifle. ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ What stock is that? Love that color. If I had that thing in a 22ARC I'd be on cloud 9 ........... (y) (y)

Factory Rem stock, hogged out barrel channel so it can't touch the barrel at all. Colour is rattle can something or another, I don't care for it but it was there when I needed a camo colour. Black lining was done with pipe cleaners in the grooves around the stippled panels

Same barreled action in a shortenned LVSF stock(14oz) but never felt right on a stand. I much prefer this colour.

Go with Savage for your first build! I say this because it is a rabbit hole that you will love.
IMO a factory Savage barrel with good reloads will out shoot you!
Here is a link to a really good deal I recently did on Savage Shooters:

110 Trail Hunter

I got a an action for $100.00! after selling the other parts. You do not have to spend $1.400 to get a a $600 rifle that shoots better than you can!
You are doing the right thing by doing the research, it is huge fun and rewarding good luck.

A recent build 22-250 and .243
Actually this is a Savage model 11 in a model 14 Classic stock. Kind of Barbie dress up for men!
I have about $600 in this switch barrel gun

I have swapped barrels on a number of Savages and did one Remington for a friend. I use an action wrench and barrel nut wrench and a go gage only. There really isn't a need for a no go gage on a Savage. Just snug up on the go gage and as the barrel nut is tightened there will be two or three of thousandths of headspace will be created. If you are a bit worried about not using a no go gage, just add a couple. of layers of Scotch tape to the base of the go gage. You will feel resistance if headspace is right. Back when I was short of money (most of my life) I would convert a 7-08 to .22-250 during the summer for varmints and back to 7-08 for deer season. Haven't done it in a while

The hardest part is breaking loose the factory barrel. I don't know if Savage uses gorillas to tighten the barrel nut or if the bluing salts are the issue, but it can be tough to break then barrel loose and may be hard to break the barrel nut from the barrel. Aftel the first swap it is easy as pie.

The link below is part 1 out of 4 parts on a 700 I put together myself out of parts. Finished product is a custom .20 Dasher. Putting one together yourself is most definitely doable.

Mongrel Dasher Build Part 1

I've also done the Savage rebarrel a number of times and it's even easier.

GOt a folding chassis for my savage 223 wylde. Man is it nice. Today i got bored sitting inside during rainy weather and did a rattle can job on my scope, rings, mags and bolt knob. Put way more money into this gun than i needed to, but no regrets. All put together from parts off a bare action. Shoots great and its exactly how i want it. Anybody can do it.

Model 10 lightweight action
16" 8 twist 223 wylde carbon6 barrel
MDt hnt26 chassis
Elftmann trigger
Lumley fluted titanium bolt handle
Hawkins featherweight rings
Leupold patrol hd 1-6×24 scope
Sullys arms sa-t7 suppressor

Now to head to idaho next weekend and try to get into a pack of wolves with this thing.

Killed a cougar with it 3 months ago.
