Success rate for calling in predators?

Like the question on Calling all Coyotes with Randy Anderson, I'm curious on how successful everyone is on calling critters in? Not actually taking one down, I'm talking about simply calling something in.

With where I'm at, you need to make a lot of 'dry' stands in order to finally bring something in. Reason probably being the coyotes having a very large range/territory and not being within earshot. Also when I go out, I rarely make more than one stand due to time constraints.

I figure my success rate to be about 25-30%. What about you guys?

Well I started off the Year with predators called to 11 of 13 stands. I then went something like 20 out 30. But this last 2 weekends I have been predators seen at 6 stands out of about 24. Somedays I hit everystand with a response other days is is real slow.

It depends on where I call. In Iowa, this season has had about 20% responses. Illinois was about 40%. Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas was around 90%.

I'm sitting at 45% with hand calls and at 0% with the Foxpro, I think I'm blowing it wrong. I have almost resigned the Foxpro to a night only tool and I've decided to stick with my calls for daytime action cause they seem to work. The 45% is animals called in with visual conformation, not animals down /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif.

At the first of the season my success rate was probably 35% which is pretty good for around here but it seems that I've dropped down to about 5%-10% the last month or so.

In late 06 it sucked but sense the first of the year am at about every 3 stands one dog or cat takes the plunge its been pretty good this year I guess all the cold weather has them hungry plus they are pairing up.

You kill me. That was a good one! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Sounds like "custom-call-maker-itis" to me!lol

Again, it all depends on where you are hunting. I've been in animal rich areas where doubles, triples and more are not uncommon, been in places your lucky to call one in.
I think anybody that's been predator calling long enough can say that.

For me hunting in southern New Mexico over the last couple years, I'd have to say the average is maybe around one out of every three or four stands you'll get a responce.

Seems to depend on the individual day. On days when they're hot, almost every stand will produce a response. On off days, I'll be lucky to see one the whole time.

Time of year, weather, and moon phase seem to play important roles. I like it best from Oct-Jan when it's a new moon.

I'd say my average here in the desert is about 75% response rate(howling/barking at me or coming in, but not necessarily a kill).

I took up the sport this year, after a 10 year hiatus. 20 stands over the past 4 Saturdays and not even a sighting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I did have another buddy miss one after a similar amount of stands, so it looks like 5% is good for this area. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif Hopefully, we are doing something wrong and as soon as we figure it out, things will improve. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It's interesting seeing the wide variety of answers from all over the place. Anybody else?

Where in Ontario Baron?

I dont see any MN boy's so I'll represent. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Born and raised in the Ottawa Valley, now from beautiful Kingston. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I had a 10% response rate in south/central KS the middle of Jan for 3day hunt.

Here is SW CO I've made around 30 stands and had 8 visuals and another 2 or 3 where I've had them within gun range, howling, but couldn't ever get a visual.

Yes, really fascinating stats.

25% is very good success in many places. My first calling years in S. California during the 60’s and 70’s I had critters within shooting range over 60% of stands, usually coyotes but some grey fox and bobcats, and one cougar. Lots of critters, excellent calling conditions, few callers.

This season, starting last Fall, I have had a 21% aggregate success on all predator stands, plus several strong probables that I did not count.

5 cougar stands, all with Minaska Bandit e-call; 1 near certain probable. 0% or 20%? (One season we spent a three day intensive cougar trip with nothing called and it dropped to probably 5% that year. Another season we had 25% of cougar stands bring in a cougar, 2 cats in 8 stands.)

4 wolf stands, one with hand call, the others with Bandit; 0 wolves, 1 near certain cougar. 0% intended target plus a probable non-target critter.

9 bobcat stands, all Minaska e-caller (some in poor locations merely because I wanted to try my new e-caller). 2 bobcats (plus a probable) and 1 coyote; 33%.

One black bear calling attempt, hand call. 1 black bear; 100%. Saw the bear prior to calling.

Successfully called mule deer, whitetails and blacktails plus caribou with an aggregate 35% success per stand on non-predators this year, plus an unknown critter glimpsed that was probably a lynx. Didn't count the unknown critter in stats.

Trashcan, I do just the opposite I use the Foxpro in the daytime when the predators are looking for the cause of the distress to get their attention away from my location and to help me work the wind to my advantage. Then at night i tend to use hand calls to get them looking in my direction so their eyes show better. I like hunting daytime so I tend to use the Foxpro more. Not sure but I would guess that I see a critter about every 4th setup on average.
