Suggestions for 17hmr bolt gun?

Got the lady into hunting so now I have to buy another of all the things I already own. As if it wasn't expensive enough! Anyway I've got a 10/22 I bought new when I was 12 but 2 people squirrel hunting with 1 rifle doesn't work well. I want to upgrade a tad, was thinking either 22mag or 17hmr and have pretty much decided on the 17. Figured it could also double as a bear gun lol. So what do you guys recommend? I don't want to sink a ton of money into it but want a quality gun that will be as accurate as possible. I've looked at the CZs, my dad has a trainer model 22lr and it shoots great but a bit heavy so I was looking at the American models, they're on the high end of what I want to spend. Here's the catch - I hate the Savage Accutrigger, no matter how well it works. I would probably own several Savages because of their accuracy and price point but I hate that dang thingy in the way of the trigger! So... what do you fellers recommend to me?

honestly I had the mossberg 817 or whatever model number it is. it was very accurate, but i was dumb and bought it for yote/fox hunting. shot one yote with it watched teh bullet hit and watched the yote run away never to be found. So I sold it and upgraded.

thing costs about $180 new at dicks or gander and was worth every penny of that and some more.

I saw a Savage "Stevens 310" series at Dicks in a 17HMR for $179. It doesn't have the accu trigger and has a composit stock and was very light weight. Not all Savages have the accu trigger.

I absolootly love my marlin 917vs, have shot marmets out to 250yards. i got bored shooting spent 22lr cases at 100 yards
set it up for under 5 with scope and bipod

I've got a Savage 93LH in 17hmr with the accutrigger and heavy barrel. The rifle is ridiculously accurate. If I do my part it literally is a one hole gun at 50 yds with Hornady 17gr ammo. At 100yds off the bench with NO wind I've shot a boring number of sub 1/2 minute groups as well. Fantastic performance from an inexpensive platform.

Too bad you are not a fan of the accu-trigger. I would say for the money that you can't beat a savage. Maybe your other half doesn't mind the accu-trigger and that can be her gun. My coworker loaned me his wood stocked .17 to shoot and it impressed me.

Let me say that just about any .17 is going to be accurate except I witnessed an H&R the other day that I wouldn't spend my money on with 2 1/2" groups.

If you can't stand the Savage and still want to stay economical then it's Marlin.

Bought mine 17 at Dick's.

I have the Savage 93R BTVS and I love it. Its the one gun I've gotten for my birthday and its the one gun my dad wishes he would've bought for him self. It's really accurate and the accu-trigger is really nice too. It's a little more expensive than some others, but I like it a lot more.

I just ordered a savage 93R17 model BVJ I am going to be using for my sage rat gun. I plan on putting a bushnell 4200 3x9 on it that I came across for $140 bucks!

I think the accu-trigger I'd just get over, same with the glock trigger, two of the best guns made, and both have the trigger. I have a savage 93R17 and it is incredably accurate, I love this gun.

I'd go for the CZ.The 452 is great but the new 455 offers the option of adding extra barrels down the road if that matters.I have their 527 American.

I went a little overboard on 17 HMRs a while ago. I have the Savage, CZ, Ruger and Marlin. They all shoot very well. The Ruger needed the trigger tuned. The Marlin needed a new trigger, period. Probably the worst fractory trigger I have ever operated. I put in the Rifle Basix and is is now pretty sweet. I did not need to touch the Savage except to tweek the consumer adjustable trigger down to about 2 pounds. The CZ, with the set trigger, needs nothing.

My first choice would be the Savage thumbhole model, with CZ a close second. Nothing wrong with the Ruger and after a trigger job the Marlin is a shooter.

You could get the Marlin or the Stevens and upgrade the trigger to rifle basix's. I have a Marlin in 22mag that needs a trigger badly! I love my Savage accutrigger, but I understand if you don't Problem is you will have more money is a Steven's with with a trigger upgrade then you will in a Savage with a light weight accutrigger. The Marlin is accurate and may be the best way to go in your situation. Buy a real pretty one and get the $83 dollar 14 oz-2 lbs. trigger from rifle basix's and it should make for an excellent magnum rimfire! While your at it order two triggers and send me one for my birthday!

I got a CZ 452 Varmint last year and I'm very happy with it. You can pick up a lightweight trigger spring from Brownells for $5 that makes it really nice. I had two friends buy the Savage heavy barrel with scope package from Cabela's at the same time. All three guns are accurate, but both of the Savages suffered from misfires all summer long. There seem to be a lot of people having that problem with the Savage. A heavy dose of brake cleaner to the bolt finally cleared up the problem on them though.

Hm... kinda all over the board with good options! I didn't really want to spend as much for the CZ but I keep going back to it, every CZ I've seen has functioned perfectly and shot great. If the cheaper ones are going to need some TLC on the trigger etc then why not just buy a little more expensive rifle that's ready to go.

By the way, Chase16 very nice Chevelle. A 1970 right? I have a 72 halfway through restoration. Gotta love old muscle!
