Suggestions on a good optic

I have a bushmaster m4 patrolman in 223/5.56. It does have the front sight post but I don't believe that's an issue as long as I get a scope mount that sits up a little higher. I'm wanting a versatile scope that I can make 500 to 600 yard shots with but also make shots 100 yards and in with. I'm not looking to kill my bank account. Just something decent that will get me started. Does anyone know of anything I should check out? Thanks in advance. Who knew Optic selection could be so overwhelming lol

Cabelas has a vortex diamondback hp 3-12x42 on sale for 229....I have 3 of the hp's and like them all..camera land ny has a meopro 3-10x40 on sale for 350. I'm told it's the same line as the cabelas euro scopes and I've heard really good things about those.

Sportsmans Warehouse has the Burris Fullfield E1 3x9x40 with a standard duplex on sale for 149.97 (regularly 219.99) right now. I have three and their excellent scopes for the money. BTW...you wont be able to see your front sight through your scope, so just mount it at a normal height.

Cabela's Euro are on sale, along with the other badged Meopta around.

Leupold VX-2 are always a safe bet at a great price.

For you, I'd look at the Leupold MK-AR line. They are wonderful with good features.

I'm a Nikon fanatic, and would recommend them over anything else out there. They have a proven track record and will work when you need them to. For the distances you are saying I would recommend a ProStaff 5 model in a 4-16 power. They are great scopes at great prices.

As for the front sight post, you'll never see it through the scope. So don't get all involved with trying to mount the scope up high. Just put it where it is comfortable for you and you'll be fine.

Agree with Hidalgo. The last thing I would jeopardize is a solid cheek weld. There are far too many AR's with scopes mounted way too high. I know everyone is different, but not by that much.

Laugh all you want guys but for the money this is a great compact scope,,,and rings included .

I'm not going to laugh, but I will say that there is NO WAY I would trust a Leapers brand scope on any of my rifles. Sorry, but their reputation precedes them ... and it's not a good reputation. A few years back and would have agreed with you Hidalgo but look a RR they used to put out the biggest pile of POOP there was and they turned it around so is the same with these scopes. And to be honest i would have never bought one till i read a artical in a gun mag about them.

Leapers is utg right? Because the better rails leapers makes for ar15 rifles I hear is good stuff.

Alright after doing some research and going to the gun stores and looking through these different optics I'm dead set on the leupold mark at mod 1 3x9x40. It's a mildot scope and it's got a BDC. I think it will look awesome on my rifle.

An old adage that has been adopted wholeheartedly by most serious shooters is:

"Spend as much or more on the glass than you did on the rifle."

While I don't adhere to this absolutely, I have enough experience to know that bargain glass that works doesn't exist.

There's also:

"Cry once, not twice."

I have found that to be true. Not most of the time, but all of the time.

I could fund Seal Team 6 with the money I wasted over the years taking chances on equipment that was a "bargain".

LOL

Did I ever tell you I can't stand the term "for the money" or "pretty good for the money". I can't tell you how many times I've heard that in optic threads. Beleive what you want, pat yourself on the back all you want because you discovered a optic gem for pocket change.
Said it before, and I'll say it again:

1. You get what you pay for in glass.

2. Most guys pay too much for extra power when they should buy lower power/better glass at the same price point. It never ceases to amaze me that guys will have 2,3,4 AR's or rifles of similar cal. and put [beeep] glass on all them. They would be far better served with one gun and take all the money they spent on more guns and spend it on glass. That being said, decent glass STARTS well north of $200 ...PERIOD.

3. I have spent a lot of time behind high end stuff (S&B,USO,NF,Marsh, etc.) and a lot of time with what I call entry glass. What I consider entry level glass would be what most on here would term "high end" (+- $500). No, I didn't have to pay for the high end stuff because my employer was. I do have to buy my own stuff now, and find I can get 90%+ of the performance of the high end stuff out of the $500-1000 glass.

4. THE LOWER PRICE POINT "CONSUMER" GRADE STUFF AIN'T WORTH MESSING WITH.
