Suggestions on Backpack

Looking for some suggestions on a backpack that I can use to throw my ammo/glass/range-finder in along with being able to strap my shooting mat too.

I found myself more than once trying to gather up my gear to head out only to inevitably forget something. That and I would like a one job fits all setup where I can carry just about everything bt my gun and be able to hike a mile or two before sitting down to shoot.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Better stuff now but back when I was woods-bumming any old BRIGHT colored nylon day/back pack worked for me. Carried all the stuff you mentioned except shooting mat. No bottled water either - no Perrier in U.S. back then.

When deer hunting often strapped a shotgun to pack in addition to carrying a rifle. PBJ,an apple and a water filled aluminum canteen were my basic food groups..no trail mix, either that or I missed it.

I leave all my calling gear in my Eberlestock Gunslinger. Is bigger than really needed for predator/varmint hunting but with the built in scabbard the rifle can ride there and it all stays together. Throw in some food and drinks and I am ready to go.

What he said...the Gunslinger is a great piece of kit, you certainly get your moneys worth...

That Eberlestock looks like nice stuff.

Not sure I need the Gunslinger but that X1A1M Rifle Pack looks just about perfect. Anyone have any experience with it?

Thanks for the advice fellas, much appreciated!

Merry Christmas!

Everyone should check out Crooked Horn Outfitters stuff. I have a Master Guide Pack II and it is awesome. I use it for hunting which is what it was designed for but it would serve well in many different applications. Crooked Horn packs are very good quality.

They also make a great bino system and a cover for your binoculars. Great stuff I can not stress enough.

SShooterZ,
Choosing a pack is like choosing a calbre. Gotta know what you want to do and under what conditions. You haven't given enogh advice on those issues for a logical reply.

I hunt in a hot and thirsty environment. I carry enough for a half day hunt. I like to have my stuff well organised and easy to get to. I wanted camo n tough. I chose Badlands Packs UltrDay, but could have gone larger to the Hybrid. In a cooler environment I'd have chosen a Badland Packs Superday, hands down.

Most of my hunting is done in the late summer through early spring months and I'm looking for something to use in the MidWest and in South and North Dakota.

Mostly hunting prairie dogs and coyotes and just need something to hike a few hundred yards away from the truck that is easy to mount/dismount and will hold my glass, ammo, pods, etc.

Having an attached rifle scabbard/sling setup is definitely a bonus. For water I would just throw a bottle or two in the pack and haul it with me.

Ditto on the eberlestcok packs: I have the new gunslinger II and it fits my use perfectly, I can carry everything I need for a hunt from PD's to elk. I also have the tred barta model ( it is a little smaller ) but it also works well.

SShooterZ,
The problem with choosing a pack is that there is no perfect choice. The perfect choice is a gun bearer like the African safari hunter had. In the absence of that everything else is a compromise. Like most obsessed focused hunters I have a few of everything and none of them are perfect.

Boy isn't that the truth. Decisions, decisions, decisions...

SShooter, Send a PM to RedFrog here on PM... He set me up with a great backpack that held all my supplies, for a good price....I don't know if he still carries them but he has the knowledge and where with all to find what you need...
