Ok I like the feel of both the western grip and the bisley grip. I have only shot the western grip. SO I am now looking at the super Blackhawk hunter. And am wondering what you guys prefer for the stock the western grip or Bisley grip??

And I keep hearing about the knuckle smashing with the western grip with heavy loads so does the Bisley grip not have that problem??

Thanks Guys!

The problem comes in the larger than 5.5" barrels because the longer Super Blackhawks have the sharp edge on the finger side of the trigger guard, and the shorter barreled ones are rounded trigger guards. I think they call the "pointed" one a dragoon guard, or something like that.

I can't speak to the Bisley, but the western grip was a bit small and slippery to me. I think the bisley is actually even smaller in circumference but longer, which to me probably would have been better because my little finger hung off the the bottom of the grip on the Western. I replaced my western with a Hogue, which actually is a hair larger (circumference wise)than I seem to like. Go figure. I was going to make my own out of an Elk shed. (When I find the right one)

At any rate I posted earlier about my 44mag "issues" with getting used to that cannon. Good luck!!

I was looking at picking up one of those as well, and had the same problem! I had both sitting out on the counter switching back and forth and couldnt decide, I suppose Id have to shoot them in order to make a decision... so I just put it toward the middle of the want list now. LOL

GOod luck

I actually had both guns you are speaking of. I had the western version first...felt good and no problems with recoil...unbeleivably accurate with my own loads or any of the factory loads I put thru it...but like an idiot, I sold it because Ruger came out with the Bisley and everyone said it was the best grip to have.

Never had the chance to put the Bisley thru its paces because it just banged up my hands terribly..bad knuckle buster!!! So, I sold it too and saved my pennies and bought a used Freedom Arms premier in .44.

I honestly have to say that the western ruger was a great gun and easily as accurate as the FA..if I could have gotten that one back I would have bought it in a heartbeat! AS much as I love the FA...the western SBH hunter is a great gun and a better value.

Bisley style is way more comfortable to shoot with hot loads.

I've shot the freedom arms in 454 & 50 A&E, have owned and shot many super black hawks with hot 44 mag. looads. and a few years ago while at the range sighting in my T/C contender with a ssk 7mm br barrel A fellow shooter in the next lane was shooting his linebaugh custom bisley in 500 linebaugh.

He asked if he could shoot my pistol as he was looking at buying one and before I could say anything he offered to let me shoot his pistol.

linebaugh all I have to say is WOW !!!!!!

If your considering a single action big bore I say get the bisley.

i put hogue rubber grips on my super blackhawk and they are way better that the factory wood. the gun doesn't rotate or slip in my hand anymore with heavy loads.

I have the Bisley, the plow handle grip feels great to me until I shoot it, I have big mitts and the tip digs into my palm when shooting the plow handle. The Bisley is more comfortable. Look Familiar?

Never tried the Bisley outside the shop but my western style with the Uncle Mikes grips work very well for me and I have seen no reason to change.

I shoot a Blackhawk in 41 Mag, and can't figure out, for the life of me, why you would want a Bisley over the SAA type grip. Shooting 19grs of 2400 under a 210 LSWC is more than manageable once I figured out the nuance of how to hold it. Once I figured it out, recoil is snappy but easy to control and follow up shots are just a natural next step after the last shot. I haven;t handled a SBH in SAA or Bisley configuration, but my BH is great just how it is.

Another vote on the Bisley. I have a 7.5" blued 45 colt that I just had Dustin Linebaugh cut down to a much more packable 4 5/8" and slick up the action as well as get the cylinder throats reamed.

I love how it balances now and it shoots well. The grip for me is great and deals well with 325 gr. LBT over 1300fps.

It is the style that Dustin's dad recommended and I believe requires for his 475 and 500 conversions.

Maybe you can't figure it out because you haven't done it? Just a thought.......

Couple that with the fact that a 210gr via 41 mag is a pea shooter compared to what I and some others shoot.......

I believe it depends on YOUR hands. I've had both in 45 LC with 4 5/8" barrels, and in my extra-large mitts, the Bisley actually hit my middle finger worse!! (I do have large knuckles). The reason I stuck with the BH was that it not only felt better firing, but with the alloy grip frame, carried better in a belt holster. The steel Bisley grip frame seemed to make the pistol top-heavy in the holster.
The BH doesn't try to turn upside-down while I'm horseback or on the 4-wheeler, or even on foot!! I do love my Colt Bisley in 32-20 though !!!
