Super Yoter screen goes black and white

Went out hunting Wednesday night and had an issue with my scope. After 5 minutes or so of powering on the screen went black and white (reminds me of tv static). Turned off the device and powered back on, image quality seems to have suffered slightly. It did it again later on in the evening. Anything I need to try before contacting Bering after the holidays? I’ve tried external power and 123 batteries. It’ll do it on both.

Thanks

Merry Christmas!

I believe what you are referring to is what people call the Stained-Glass NUC or SnowStorm NUC. Here is an example of what it looks like on some 640 Bering thermals.

It happens during the NUC. Where a normal NUC only takes a portion of a second, this one takes about 2-3x longer. The user sees the odd looking screen, the NUC happens, and then some people report a slightly degraded image for a period of time. The image after isn't bad, it may not be as crisp as before. It is a known bug with the iRay 640 sensor, so it can occur on the Phenom 640, and all the Super Yoters. It typically only happens in colder weather. For me, it only happens in temps below around 40°. Since, I hunt in ND, this is pretty much all winter. For me, it happens a few times a night on my Phenom, and happens maybe once every few nights of hunting on my Super Yoter. It is hard to tell on my Super Yoter because I don't scan with it, so I am not looking through it 100% of the time.

I sent my Phenom 640 and Super Yoter 50 for a firmware update this summer to potentially test if Bering had fixed this. For my units, I believe it decreased the frequency of it happening on my Super Yoter. I actually feel like it happens more often on the Phenom although I feel overall, the image quality on the Phenom improved after the update. It is a cosmetic thing as it hasn't stopped me from shooting 600 coyotes in the last 1.5 winters. If the image seems degraded, you can manually NUC the scope (press the two buttons closest to you at the same time).

That’s exactly what it looks like. 10-4, sounds like nothing to worry about until after season. I’ll give the manual NUC a try and see if it cleans it up. Does Bering announce when they have a firmware update? Or is that something I should inquire about?

No, they do not announce firmware updates. Honestly in all of the years, the Hogsters, Phenoms, and Yoters have been out there have been very few. They typically do a great job on quality and don’t need firmware updates.

I had a Trijicon MK3 that did the same thing. Very infrequently, only on cold nights and only after a NUC. The rep from Trijicon told me that it was caused by 1 of the sensors reacting slightly slower than the others during NUC. The solution was to NUC again. That always corrected the image.
He told me that it was not uncommon but I never talked to another Trijicon owner that said that their scope did that. I never did send it in, I just accepted it as a quirk. However if it had of happened every night or two I would have sent it back.
The attached image is not as clear as yours because mine is a photo taken through the viewfinder. This is what the Trijicon display looked like;
