Suppressed AR opinions on Gemtech

This could easily go in at least two other places, but I'll post here and let the mods figure it out.

I'm considering a Gemtech G5 for a 16" .223. I am interested in people's opinions who have them, particularly if you have tried/heard other suppressors on that configuration.

What is the gas blow back like? How is the sound? POI shift?

I am also looking at a Trek, yes the thread on. My thinking on that one is less gas in the face.

Thanks.

never heard the G5, and never herd a suppressor on a 16" rifle, but I HAVE heard a suppressor on a 7" SBR and other Gemtech products.

With the SBR, I never noticed any gas blow back at all, but that's not to say there isn't any. I just always happen to shoot outside where even the slightest breeze will dissipate that gas problem.

POI shift is not something that ANYONE can give a solid answer on. Each model will effect each rifle different. A company tries to build something with the least amount of shift possible, but that's not a guarantee.
One test with G5 #1 could show a 1" POI shift and the same test with G5 #2 could show a 6" shift. It's a crap shoot that cant be predicted.

What statistics on the TREK cause you to believe it will cause less blow back? It seems like a counter intuitive assumption since the G5 has a larger volume. I am not arguing, it's just a factor I don't have data on or experience with so I was curious too?

No argument taken cbass. I don't understand the physics well enough to know if there would be a difference. I know the thread on has a tighter fit to the barrel than the QD does to the can. I don't know if it would make any difference at all on back pressure and if that would affect "gas face".

My situation is that I only have one can to compare to, i.e., I have no comparisons.

Living in Washington -- the land of can-owna-can-but-can't-usea-can -- not a lot of guys have cans. So none of my hunting buddies have them.

Just looking for info.

THUNDER BEAST ARMS is the one I would buy. I have their 30p-1 and it is quiet! They have several videos on YouTube. They have a nice website also. If you email them you can expect a quick response.

My .02 cents:

I get a lot of "gas in the eye", with mine. Bought a gas buster to help out with that. Sound isn't too bad, it's mainly the action noise that is kind of loud. Yes, I get a POI shift with the can as well. I think shift will be different for every can,,,

I only have one 16" barrel, it takes an M4-2000. Run a Phantom on an SBR, but they can't really be interchanged and compared since they are both QD. The mounts are rocksetted on,,,

Sendit...
i had a G5 QD for a couple years and i just sold it last year, it was a nice piece, good sound suppression (i have heard better), POI was minimal (couple inches), but just as CBASS stated, every can/gun is gonna be different... if i would do it over i would of went with the thread on for better accuracy. IMHO take a long hard look at the TREK, and if your not set on Gemtech, may i suggest looking @ the YHM phantom 556 QD, i have had better accuracy with this model than the Gemtech QD mods, and both cans suppressed muzzle blast equally... i have shot multiple 223 cans, shoot me a PM if you have any questions regarding suppressor comparisons.

I have a Phantom for my .223 and am looking at an AAC 762-SDN-6. Anyone have any imput or experience with AAC?

sure do... i drank the kool-aid... and wish i wouldn't of, that's why you consult someone who has shot multiple cans and knows what their getting, i got a cyclone, sure its got 10 baffles stacked, but the sound suppression is not as good as the HVT, Phantom 7.62, Shadow XL ti, all which only have 5 including the blast baffle, bad design, maybe, but i'll tell you what, there is a huge market for AAC and KAC, sure they might have great prods, but do some research, because you'll never know what your missing if you don't get the quietest can!!!
now... GET YOUR CAN ON!!!

I have the sandstorm and will happily buy another gemtech. As far as the blowback is concerned. . . an adjustable gas block is in order as well. They can be bought for most contours or a drill and tap with a set screw will modify your own.

I have an AAC M4-2000, love the can. Mainly run it on a Remmy LVSF in .223. Works awesome for that. Nothing like hearing the 50gr V-max smack vermin. You know you have a hit,,,

Only thing I wish I'd of done different, is buy a multi-purpose 30 cal can. Instead of buying a dedicated .223 can, got a great deal though. I would buy another AAC can for sure. The SDN-6 looks promising,,,

I just got my YHM Phantom 7.62 QD, seems pretty sweet, Im gonna be running it on my .223, .308 & .243wssm. I wish I could have waited for the Titanium version to come out, she's not the lightest thing in the world. Only other can I've shot is a 5.56 OPS Inc. on a Mark 12 and it was pretty quiet. Gonna have to test them out side by side this weekend.

No pics of the .308 yet, it's still getting threaded.

Cant wait till my 180gr round nose's & Trailboss powder shows up, gonna be some whisper shooting subsonics.

Nice photos dzlfarmboy. What's the overall length?

I appreciate the input everybody. It's a big decision and there are many options. I just don't have that many fellow shooters who have cans, so I'm asking.

The decision to shoot suppressed as much as possible has been made however!

It's 8.5" overall, yeah take your time and pick the best one, cause once you get one you just can't resell it that easy and try another one out. If I could redo, I'd anti up for a Titanum one at like 16oz

BOOM...winning.

Me and my friend did some side by side shooting last night with his 5.56 Ops Inc can that has the barrel collar. I also had hime stand about 15yds away not looking while I shot both rifles without him knowing which one was being shot.

We both agreed that the Ops Inc was a lil quiter, but its not really apples to apples beings mine was a .30cal can on my .223 compared to his 5.56 can on his .223

Also take a look at SAS Suppressors. His prices on Titanium are almost unmatched. Also if you are wondering about quality, he is Accuracy International's contracted suppressor. That's credentials!

I'd go for the Titanium 30 caliber Arbiter.

I have a Titanium .338 QD muzzle break mounted, and a steel M47 .223 that I am waiting for tax stamps on (1.5 months down).

My bro in law bought a 30 cal muzzle break or flash hider mounted steel thread on.

I can't wait to do a side by side of my .223 can vs his 30 cal on our AR's. I hear I'm gonna lose that!
