Hey fellas I dont know if this is the correct place to post this topic but here it goes.

I am thinking about the day the zombies start roving the streets and was wondering how I could learn more about food storage and shelf time of food products.
I would like a bit more of a back up supply of everything it takes to survive incase everything goes to heck in a hand basket.
I have plenty of water supply, fuel ect but still do not understand the rest of what it takes for a good supply of food and related stuff.

Rice and dry goods,,will last forever or near it,, there is a group my aunt is a member of,,ill try and get the link.

canned foods, soups, fruit, tuna fish, peanut butter, rice & dried goods as mentioned,`comfort` foods (this would be anything chocolate for me)...as the supply nears its expiration date-donate to the local food pantry.
I am near a water supply, but it would need to be cleaned or treated somehows before I`d feel good `bout drinking it.

Griz, Here are a few links with alot more info than I could type in a night. It should be a good place to start. I've been building up food storage for a few years now, as well as a stock of ammo, water and "luxury" items that are non-perishable. Certain medications are also good things to consider. I've also built up a collection of propane tanks and a few different cooking implements to go with them, from my gas grill down to a single burner that will fit in your pocket.

The sky seems to be the limit on what you can start storing and it may seem overwhelming when you think of it all, but if you just start collecting and make it a priority, you'll build up a decent supply in a few months.

Article with good info:

Retail store to buy items:

There are also several food storage blogs that you can find on a search engine. Most have some good info and if they are current can give you ideas of what you can be storing at different times of the year.

Hope it helps.

I respectfully disagree Jack. If things get bad enough, paper money may not buy you anything and gold might not fare much better, depending on the severity of the situation. At that point, arms and violence will be the currency of the desperate and unprepared.

I could imagine the look on the cashiers face if you tried to pay for a gallon of milk with gold coins.

There is a large "prepping" community on Youtube.

There is a book called, Emergency Food Storage and Survival
Handbook by Peggy Layton, that has a lot of good information about this subject.

Gold (or more likely silver) will be very important after survivors reorient a crashed society. During the crash though, "beans, bullets, and bandaids" are more important to you, and as fodder for bargaining with folks that may have other necessities you forgot to put aside. I think preparing for short-term disasters is a good idea. Preparing for TEOTWAWKI, on the other hand, takes a lot of dedication and dollars. As stated, the sky's the limit, from 30-year shelf life wheat, to hardened bunkers in your back yard, to full-on self-contained, self-sustaining survival retreats. There's a wealth of resources out there, just google them up!

Can food, flour, sugar, rice, dry meats will hold you for awhile. But you need water and for the long term, radio, batteries, more batteries, basic tools, of course guns & ammo. Batteries and tools will be worth more than gold later in the event. Fuel may be good. One thing I know obesity in America is going to keep a lot of people alive for some time, but they are going to be mean and hungary when the selves empty. So try to keep your footprint small and simple.

Short term is easy, long term would be difficult for the average person. Most people in this country are 7 days away from total Anarchy if it all goes bad.

For city folk, learn to shoot and have a plan to get out of the city.

Long term For country folk to do now:

Have a plan.

Hand pump well...water first. Be able to conceal your water point.

Raise a large garden, learn to dehydrate, can, and cure meats.

Stockpile other long term food items, medical supplies, medications, Vet antibiotics, reference books, warm clothing, and figure out sanitation.

Be able to reasonably defend in place as the cities empty out and have a breach plan because nothing is totally secure.

Fuel is the least of your problems and running engines draw attention. If you can work out the bare basics a lot the other questions and problems will soon be very easy to plan for.

I think it's wise to prepare for relatively short term disaster of a few months, but a long-term total collapse without order and authority being restored will produce 2 types of people...predators and victims.
If you aren't prepared to become a predator, prepare to become a victim.

All you need is bullets.....zombies are surprisingly tastey.

And if you had seen the movie "Zombieland", you would know that Twinkies last forever.
