SW Idaho rock chuck

Can anyone living in SW Idaho or familiar with hunting these parts recommend a good place to go rock chuck hunting? I'm not expecting people to share their specific spots, just maybe general areas to look. Thanks!

Yeah, I was in the 1000 Springs area a few weekends ago and saw some. I know there is an annual Rock Chuck Derby in Bliss every year too, so no doubt they are around here.

Part of the excitement of the hunt, is putting in the time to scout and find new spots. I'll be moving up to SW Idaho soon, and have already mapped out areas I will be scouting after I arrive. I don't expect there to be any chucks out when I get there, but I know what sign to look for that tells me there is a decent population. I'll be ready for next spring.

Learn their habitat, then jump on Google Earth and make a list of areas for you to physically check. Next, hop in your vehicle and head to those areas to scout. Speak to landowners, farmers, folks at the local feed stores in the area. All of this will help, but putting miles on your vehicle will be the best way to find some decent spots, and it will be so much more rewarding!

Good luck!

Eric

Yep, excellent points. I certainly don't mind the exploring part. I guess a better way to approach this would be to try and meet some people and try to establish some hunting partners. I'm new to the sport, but certainly not new to Idaho. Not sure where in SW Idaho you are headed, but if you are ever in need of a hunting partner when you get here, PM me.

Are you a skilled coyote hunter? I'm trying to get into that this year and might be willing to help out with chucks if someone can help me with coyotes.

I see 'chucks just about everywhere I go in SW Idaho. Finding chucks in that area is like finding a hooker in Hong Kong. They are on every corner. All you have to do is open your eyes and look.

Seriously, I'm not sure it would be possible to make even the slightest effort to find them and not succeed.

I wish I could take you up on your offer, but I'm new to coyote hunting as well. It never hurts to learn together though.

Well I guess I'll go hooker hunting this weekend then

If Hong Kong is where you are going to do that you should send a PM to Dave. It looks like he knows where all the best places to go are!

Thanks Tim! I've heard nothing but good things on this forum about them. Now if I could just find the time in my life to get to one of their meetings.

Thanks for the reminder! Meeting them for lunch on Wednesday. Beans and cornbread for me! Yum!

I'm a member of Idaho Varmint Hunters and I live in so. west Idaho. The 'chucks in so. west Idaho are few and far between. You see one once in awhile but they're pretty well shot out. There's some on private land but it's hard to get permission from the farmers. The best 'chuck shooting is in central, so. central and eastern Idaho. Sorry but that's how it is. When we get together to shoot them we have to travel at least 2 1/2 hrs. east of Boise area.

Thanks for sharing some information. It at least points me in a general direction to go look. And this is kind of where I've been thinking of heading. I don't mind the drive, just have to find the time to put in the time and do it.
