SXS shotgun question

I walked in the local shop a couple weeks ago looking for a new grouse gun.....I got a really good deal on a cz ringneck 12gauge. It was a little heavier than I wanted in a carry all day bird gun and I was really in the market for a 20gauge, but it was a deal I couldn't pass up....and it points like a wand for me. Had it out last week and killed a limit of quail with it, I've already done a good bit of damage on the local piegon population too. All in all its a fun gun. It has screw in chokes, 26" barrels and a 3" chamber. I am liking the gun so well it got me wondering if anyone has ever used a double gun calling coyotes? There's no reason at all it shouldn't work, but I don't think I have ever seen a thread or post about it. Anyone here ever ran a double barrel for predators?

I salute the man going traditional hunting with a double gun. It has screw in chokes and shoots buckshot so game on!been fixing to get a cz bobwhite in either 28 or 20 myself. My only double barrel is an o/u .410. Love .410 but it's limited to squirrels and rabbits. Here in CT game birds are non existent aside from turkey, woodcock, and ducks. Don't hunt any of them because turkeys are too easy of prey and it's a waste when only the breast meat gets used. Woodcock season lines up with deer season. I will be damped if I am going to pay over 50 bucks in permits to freeze in a swamp for waterfowl. Just my .02.

My only three inch gun is a Ruger Red Label. I use it all the time, its taken three bobcats and a couple doz yotes. Its quiet to load when sneaking in to that first stand. I added Tru Glo sights with the ghost ring. I always carry a call in my gear, so one day while grouse hunting I sat down to rest, put a couple loads of BB in my win 21 skeet gun and called in coyote and smoked her. Use what you like, use what you have, just do it !
Enjoy every hunt.

Masshunter- I have several guns that pull duty while calling. Rifles and Shotguns. But I like the idea of going traditional....was just wondering if anyone here was with me lol.

Double barrel 12ga, Full/Full old 1930's model with 30" barrels. Kicked my teeth out.

Then bought an Ithaca 37 with a modified choke, the ultra light kicked my teeth out.

Then bought an 870 3" with 30" full choke, that also kicked my teeth out.

Then bought a 1100 with full choke, home sweet home, good killing gun.

You would NOT be happy at ALL with a 20ga 3" buckshot at 30 yards.

Sweet gun....I was just fondeling a used 28ga Bob White at the gunshop the other day...seemed about perfect for Quail/Grouse/or even Rabbits....If I didn't have my little Merkel 20ga it would have come home with me.....

As for Coyotes with a SXS.....there's one way to find out:) but just remember.....pix or it didn't happen....

Keith- no doubt it will have some bite to it, but I've never real paid much attention to recoil when shooting game, especially in thick winter clothing so...I should survive lol.

RP- I was hesitant because I've heard the horror stories with the Turkish shotguns, but I couldn't resist. I will say that I'm not a big fan of the bbl selector and would prefer double triggers..but for the $$$ I can live with it. I'm going to pick up a couple differnt choke tubes this weekend and play around with it, might do better than expected

I have an LC Smith 12 gauge SxS with 32 inch barrels and full choked....I get some funny looks in the Dove field....But I sure love it....I also think about my Father and Grandfather hunting with it as well so I can't just let it sit idle....And its [beeep] on the crows too....

that is what I used as my first calling shotgun. Shot buckshot real well, but we hunted 4 in a truck and a gun needed to work for everybody. I did not want to cut the stock to put on a recoil pad, sold the gun for some serious green.

I really need to shoot a gas auto, the 4th and 5th shot of a 3" magnum can be really rough on a shoulder and cheek.

Speaking of old Elsie's....

..... I bought this 30" Full and Full Field Gun when I was right out of high school (used)....I beat the he11 out of it untill one of the firing pin retainers split in half and the barrels developed some inverted dimples from steel shot.....it's still a nice wall hanger though ....

I'm down at the convention and use a drilling to hunt coyotes, 16ga SxS up and a rifle under an ounce of NP BB's does the trick. Killed two with it and two with a çombination gun 22 Savage Highpower over a single 12 ga 2.75" running 1 1/4 ounce of BB or F shot. I haven't had to use the rifle barrels yet.

Pics when I get back to my computer.

I have a 1934 LC Smith field 12 gauge. It has 30" barrels mod and full. This shot gun is in great shape, I still hunt pheasants with it.

Very nice....!!!

Speaking of old doubles, my boss and my gunsmith friend/mentor gave me this old Belgian 12 ga. double for graduation from high school in 1954, then my gunsmith friend guided me through the restoration.

The stock was solid, showing the normal amount of "character" as one would expect from a 105 year old firearm. Barrels had ant nests half way up the barrels, right hammer was cracked but all there and locks were serviceable. Nipples were rusted away but threads were close enough to 5/16 SAE that we turned nipples from bolts after chasing the threads. Tied it down to an old tire and used a lanyard to trip first one trigger and then the next on a full (fired) 12 ga shell of FFg behind a double charge of shot to proof it. Put a hand rubbed oil finish on the stock and shot a few baskets full of crows and dove with it over the years.

Sadly, both my boss and gunsmith friend are gone now and I have long since retired the old gun. I do feel the urge to take it out of the safe occasionally, just to refresh many fond memories.

Regards,

Savage 311 in 12 gauge
1921 Le Fever Nitro Special in 12
Acme damascus with hammers in 12 ???? Was my Great Grandfathers, not a shooter.

I like to shoot these when the mood strikes me, I have also loaded up some BP shells. You can use the red WAA12R wads with AA hulls and get a good dram equivalent load.

Interested in your BB load, I assume its a handload. My Drilling is a 21/2 16 over 8x57JR. I have a lot of birdshot, but nothing big enough for coyotes.

Mine is also a 2 1/2" 16ga and it uses Longshot powder to keep the pressure down. Right now I would have to give you the numbers by mèmory and I don't want do that. PM me in two weeks, I should be home by then, still hunting for awhile.

I hunt with a browning cynergy and a Winchester 101 quite regularly
. I use them from yotes to ducks and just about everything in between.
I really like hunting with my doubles, super reliable , very easy maintence.
Loading and unloading is super quiet and they really slip easy in and out of the case.
A pleasure to operate :
