I went to a new area today. It looked really good. Only had time for A few setups. The first one All we called in was a bunch of birds, that we saw anyway. Next setup found us overlooking a valley, sitting tight in some buckbrush. looking across the wyoming shortgrass prairie. Immediately upon starting to call, 30 or so deer headed our way. They got close, spread out from 7 to 80 yards. We finally spotted a yote and he ran full speed right to us, but he was right behind the last couple of deer. He was getting bothered by some does, and wouldn't come the last bit. finally the deer busted and took the coyote with him. Never had a shot. We got in the car to drive up the two track over looking a creek bottom. We went around a corner, and blew a yote off the road. dangit...lets go 200 yards and call anyway. fifty yards later we spooked a couple more dogs. Dangit....now we've spooked all of them. so we drive on and go about 300 yards, telling ourselves we would park behind a little hill. just before we got to it, we spooked another! In frustration, I jumped out of the car, got a freehand running shot off, and missed clean. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif upon shooting, the hole hillside ran away. There were yotes everywhere! Joe jumped out of the back, I leaned over the hood, and we prepared to protect the fort. Nine running shots later and joe had nailed two with his .308( /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif), and I 1. So, we had seen many coyotes, called twice, and killed three. I was frustrated as heck though, because we had driven a mile and a half through prime country and hadn't made a setup yet. We went and collected our bounty, got back in the car and drove toward our next setup. Well...we made it 150 yards, before I had to stop again. A coyote was loping away, I leaned out and did some Ki-Yi's. He stopped. Bang Flop. that 308 doesn't do much for hide, but he kills em. Anyway, another set up blown. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
Drove another 200 yards, decided that was far enough and that I had better call before we jump more dogs. We setup next to a fence post and called, mixed pup distress and rabbit. well, called two dogs out of the willows below 250 yards out, that we saw. They left. a couple others ended up on top of the ridge across the valley, and we saw two more down the field a half mile. Nothing that we saw came any closer. they easily could have got into some tall grass on the edge of the willows within 150 yards, but who knows. Upon standing up and turning around /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif.....I could see the car right there. I could have swore it was hidden. no wonder they didn't come any closer. Lesson learned!
We got off two more shots, out of the car, @ 250-300 yards on dogs and didn't connect. then on our last setup I called up the last coyote, a pure white one, to 80 yards using only ki-yi's.
After this was all over, I realized that with all the mele I had neglegted my camera all together. this was easily one of the most frustrating days of calling ever. We put plenty of fur on the ground, but only called on four setups. We called in a dog at all but one stand, and only shot one we called in. We blew stand after stand by just driving into coyotes. If we would've know where to be, this day could have been epic. instead it was merely bonus dog heaven.
Four lessons learned.
#1 Shoot that dog before he gets to the deer.
#2 The first coyote you spook doesn't ruin a stand.
#3 Make sure you hide that stupid car.
#5 Scout your area if you can.
#6 If you have a nice shiny expensive digital camera, use it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif
